Crete itinerary: Chania, gorges, beaches and Knossos
Crete is Greece's biggest island, and people underestimate it. Chania to Agios Nikolaos is a long drive, so one hotel for the whole week wastes hours in the car. This prompt asks your todo.is agent to split the island into sensible bases, time the gorge hike and the lagoon boat, and add tavernas worth the detour.
The prompt
- Plan a Crete itinerary for [NUMBER OF DAYS] days, [TRAVEL DATES], for [WHO IS TRAVELLING]. We fly into [ARRIVAL AIRPORT] and will rent a car. Split the trip into two bases (west around Chania, east around Heraklion or Elounda) and keep daily driving under 2.5 hours. Include Chania old town and harbour, Balos lagoon by boat from Kissamos, Elafonissi, Knossos with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, and Spinalonga. Add the Samaria Gorge hike only if [HIKING LEVEL] fits and it's open in our month. One village taverna per day and two beaches near each base. Our interests: [INTERESTS]. Send a PDF with day-by-day plans, drive times and links. Don't book anything.
What to change
- [NUMBER OF DAYS]: E.g. "7". Five days covers one half well; 8 to 10 lets you see west and east.
- [TRAVEL DATES]: E.g. "3 to 10 June". June and September have warm sea and fewer crowds than August.
- [WHO IS TRAVELLING]: E.g. "couple", "family with kids 8 and 11", "three friends".
- [ARRIVAL AIRPORT]: "Chania" or "Heraklion". Flying into one and out of the other saves a long drive back.
- [HIKING LEVEL]: E.g. "we hike 15 km easily" or "short walks only". Samaria is about 16 km downhill.
- [INTERESTS]: E.g. "beaches, Minoan history, food, quiet villages".

Tips for a better result
- Fly into Chania and out of Heraklion (or the reverse). It saves a 2.5-hour drive back across the island.
- Samaria is one-way: you finish on the south coast and take a ferry and bus back. Imbros Gorge is a shorter alternative at about 8 km.
- Go to Balos and Elafonissi early or late in the day. By noon in summer they are crowded and the light is flat.
- Ask your agent to add each day's stops to your Google Calendar with addresses, so you can open them in maps.
Crete itinerary: FAQ
- How many days do you need in Crete? A week lets you see the west (Chania, Balos, Elafonissi) and the east (Knossos, Spinalonga) without rushing. With 4 or 5 days, pick one half.
- Do I need a car in Crete? It helps a lot. KTEL buses link the main towns, but beaches, gorges and villages are much easier with a car.
- Is Chania or Heraklion a better base? Chania is prettier and closer to the best western beaches. Heraklion is handy for Knossos and the museum; Elounda and Agios Nikolaos are calmer eastern bases.
- When is the Samaria Gorge open? Usually from about May to October, depending on weather and water levels. It can close at short notice, so check the official site before you go.
