Image to video: make a still photo move in a few seconds
A still photo of a beach, a product or a painting can come alive with a little motion: waves rolling, steam rising, a slow camera push. Attach the image and this prompt has your todo.is agent animate it into short MP4 clips that keep the original look, plus a GIF for chats and websites.
The prompt
- Animate the attached image into a [LENGTH]-second video. What should move: [WHAT MOVES]. Camera: [CAMERA MOVEMENT]. Keep everything else still and keep the people, colours and details looking exactly like the original photo. Make 2 versions so I can choose, as [ASPECT RATIO] MP4 files. Then turn my favourite into a looping GIF under 5 MB. [EXTRA REQUEST]
What to change
- [LENGTH]: 5 or 10. Image to video clips are a few seconds long.
- [WHAT MOVES]: One or two things, e.g. "the waves and the palm leaves", "steam from the cup", "her hair in the wind".
- [CAMERA MOVEMENT]: E.g. "slow push in", "gentle pan left", "still camera", "slow orbit".
- [ASPECT RATIO]: "same as the photo", 9:16 for Stories and Reels, 16:9 for YouTube, 1:1 for feeds.
- [EXTRA REQUEST]: Optional, e.g. "add a soft ocean sound" or "make it loop seamlessly". Or delete this.
Example result
- Animated photo: harbour at sunset
- Source: harbour_sunset.jpg (4032x3024) · 5 seconds · water and boats move · slow push in · same as the photo (4:3)
- Files delivered
- • harbour_sunset_v1.mp4: the water ripples and reflects the orange sky, two moored boats rock gently, the camera moves slowly toward the lighthouse
- • harbour_sunset_v2.mp4: calmer water, seagulls cross the sky from left to right, still camera
- • harbour_sunset_loop.gif: version 1 as a 3-second seamless loop, 800 px wide, 4.2 MB
- The prompt your agent used for version 1
- "Animate this photo. Gentle ripples on the harbour water reflecting the orange sunset, two small boats rocking slightly on their moorings. Slow, steady camera push-in toward the lighthouse. Keep the buildings, lighthouse and sky colours exactly as in the photo. No new objects, no text."
- What changed and what did not
- • Kept: the lighthouse shape, the colours of the sky, the houses on the hill
- • Changed slightly: the rope on the left boat looks thinner in the last second of version 1
- • Not possible: making it longer than a few seconds in one go; for a longer clip, ask for 2 clips and have them joined
- Good uses
- • A moving header image for a website or a menu screen
- • A Story or Reel background with your own text on top
- • A "living" version of an old family photo to share with relatives (check faces carefully)
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and say what should move and how the camera should behave.
- Attach your photo (JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC) and paste the prompt on the Today screen, or send both to your agent on WhatsApp.
- Your agent generates 2 short MP4 versions and tells you exactly what it asked the video model for.
- Pick one and ask for a GIF, a longer joined clip, a crop for Reels, or another try with less motion.
Tips for a better result
- Ask for one or two kinds of motion only. Small, natural movement looks real; a lot of motion is where AI starts inventing things.
- Use a sharp, well-lit photo at least 1024 px wide. Blurry or tiny images give soft, wobbly video.
- For portraits, keep the motion subtle (a blink, hair, a slight smile). Big face movements are where likeness drifts most.
- If you want text or a logo on the video, ask your agent to add it afterwards with ffmpeg so it stays sharp and spelled right.
image to video: FAQ
- Can I turn an old family photo into a video? Yes. It often works best to restore or colorize the photo first, then animate it with gentle motion. Always check faces, because AI can change small features.
- How long is an image to video clip? A few seconds per clip. Your agent can make several and join them, or loop one clip to make it feel longer.
- Can I animate a photo of a real person? Only use photos you have the right to use, and get the person's OK before sharing an animated version of them.
- Can I get a GIF instead of an MP4? Yes. Your agent converts the clip to a GIF with ffmpeg and can shrink it to fit a size limit, like under 5 MB.
