Kyoto itinerary: temples at quiet hours, Gion and Arashiyama
Kyoto has more than a thousand temples and shrines, and the famous ones are packed from mid-morning. This prompt asks your todo.is agent for a Kyoto itinerary that hits Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama and Kiyomizu-dera at the quiet hours, groups the rest by area and adds Nara for the deer and the giant Buddha.
The prompt
- Make a Kyoto itinerary for [NUMBER OF DAYS] days, [TRAVEL DATES], for [WHO IS TRAVELLING]. We're arriving from [ARRIVING FROM]. Group the temples by area (Higashiyama, Arashiyama, northern Kyoto, Fushimi) and put the busiest ones at the quietest times, with the time to arrive. Add Gion for an evening walk with etiquette tips around geiko and maiko. We'd like [EXPERIENCES]. Include a half or full day in Nara. Tell me which bus or train to take between areas. 2 food picks a day, one of them vegetarian or tofu. Send a PDF to my email. Don't book anything.
What to change
- [NUMBER OF DAYS]: E.g. "3".
- [TRAVEL DATES]: E.g. "mid-November". The agent checks autumn leaf peaks and festivals.
- [WHO IS TRAVELLING]: E.g. "couple", "mum and daughter".
- [ARRIVING FROM]: E.g. "Tokyo by shinkansen", "Kansai airport", "Osaka".
- [EXPERIENCES]: E.g. "a tea ceremony", "a kaiseki dinner", "a night at a temple lodging".
Example result
- Kyoto in 3 days, mum and daughter
- Arriving from Tokyo by shinkansen · tea, temples and food · November
- Where to stay
- • Near Kyoto Station: easiest for trains and day trips.
- • Higashiyama / Gion: traditional streets, walk to temples at dawn.
- Day 1: Higashiyama and Gion
- • Afternoon: arrive at Kyoto Station, drop bags. Bus or taxi to Kiyomizu-dera, late afternoon when tour groups leave.
- • Walk down Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka lanes to Yasaka Shrine.
- • Evening: Gion: Hanamikoji Street and the Shirakawa canal. Don't touch, block or photograph geiko and maiko up close, and respect the no-photo signs on private lanes.
- Day 2: Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama
- • Early: Fushimi Inari at 7:00 (open all day and night, free). Walk past the first crowds to the Yotsutsuji intersection for the view.
- • Late morning: JR to Arashiyama. The bamboo grove is busiest by now; head on to Tenryu-ji garden and Okochi Sanso villa.
- • Afternoon: walk the river; the Togetsukyo bridge, or the monkey park on the hill.
- • Evening: tofu dinner (yudofu), a Kyoto speciality.
- • If you can, swap: go to Arashiyama at 7:00 and Fushimi Inari at dusk.
- Day 3: Golden Pavilion and Nara
- • Morning: Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) at opening, then the Ryoan-ji rock garden.
- • Afternoon: train to Nara (about 45 min). Nara Park's bowing deer, Todai-ji's giant Buddha, Kasuga Taisha's lanterns.
- • Evening: back in Kyoto, Pontocho alley for dinner.
- Tea ceremony
- • Book a small tea ceremony in Higashiyama on day 1 or day 3. Ask for an English explanation if you need it.
- Getting around
- • City buses reach most temples but get very crowded. Combine the subway, trains and walking.
- • Use an IC card (Suica, ICOCA) on buses and trains.
- Good to know
- • Peak seasons are cherry blossom (late March to early April) and autumn leaves (mid to late November). Book stays early.
- • Many temples close around 16:30 to 17:00. Plan the evening for Gion and dinner.

- In Gion, follow the photo rules. Some lanes ban photography, and fines can apply.
- For autumn leaves, ask your agent to check the current colour reports for your week.
Kyoto itinerary: FAQ
- How many days do you need in Kyoto? Two to three days covers the main temples, Gion and Arashiyama. Add a day for Nara or Uji.
- Can you visit Kyoto as a day trip from Tokyo? It's possible by shinkansen but rushed. One or two nights in Kyoto is much better.
- Is Nara worth a day trip from Kyoto? Yes. It's about 45 minutes by train and has Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha and the deer park; half a day is enough.
- Can my agent book a tea ceremony or kaiseki dinner? It finds options with reviews and gives you the booking links. You book and pay yourself.
