Riddles for kids, sorted by age with hints and answers
A good riddle keeps a 6-year-old busy for five minutes and a 10-year-old for ten. The hard part is finding ones that match their age and aren't too obscure. This prompt has your todo.is agent pick riddles for your child's age, add a hint for each, and make cut-out cards for lunchboxes or a classroom jar.
The prompt
- Find 30 riddles for kids aged [CHILD AGES]. Sort them into easy, medium and tricky, and favour topics they love: [THEIR INTERESTS]. Only use riddles with one clear answer, no wordplay that needs adult knowledge. Give each riddle a hint so they can get there themselves. Make a printable PDF of riddle cards, [CARDS PER PAGE] per A4 page, with the riddle on the front and the answer upside down at the bottom. Then every [DAY AND TIME] send me one new riddle on WhatsApp for [WHEN WE USE THEM].
What to change
- [CHILD AGES]: E.g. "5 and 8" or "a class of 7-year-olds". Younger kids get short picture-style riddles.
- [THEIR INTERESTS]: E.g. "animals, space, football, food". Riddles about things they know land better.
- [CARDS PER PAGE]: 8 cards fits a lunchbox. 4 cards is easier for young readers and classroom walls.
- [DAY AND TIME]: E.g. "school morning at 7:30" or "Friday at 16:00". Remove this part if you only want the cards.
- [WHEN WE USE THEM]: E.g. "the breakfast table", "the school run", "a lunchbox note".

Tips for a better result
- Under 6s do best with "What am I?" riddles that describe something they can see or touch.
- Wordplay riddles (like the letter M) suit kids who already read well, usually from about 8.
- Give the hint before frustration sets in. The fun is in solving it, not in being told.
- Riddles are great for spelling and vocabulary: ask your child to write the answer, not just say it.
riddles for kids: FAQ
- What age are riddles good for? Simple "What am I?" riddles work from about 4. Riddles that play on double meanings of words click for most kids around 7 or 8.
- Do riddles help kids learn? They practise listening, vocabulary and thinking about words in more than one way. Treat them as a game rather than a test.
- Can I get riddles in another language? Yes. Ask for riddles in Spanish, French, Arabic or another language. Some English wordplay riddles don't translate, so the agent picks ones that work in that language.
