GPA calculator with a target-grade planner
Online GPA calculators make you type every course again and stop at one number. Send your agent your transcript or a list of grades and credits, and it calculates your semester and cumulative GPA (weighted and unweighted, on your school's scale), builds an Excel sheet you can update, and works out what grades you need to reach your target.
The prompt
- Calculate my GPA from these grades: [GRADES OR TRANSCRIPT]. Use this scale: [GRADING SCALE], and weight honors/AP/IB courses as [WEIGHTING RULE]. Show the semester GPA and cumulative GPA, both unweighted and weighted, with the calculation (grade points × credits) for each course so I can check it. Then tell me what average grade I need next semester, with [NEXT SEMESTER CREDITS] credits, to reach a cumulative GPA of [TARGET GPA], and whether that is realistic. Build an Excel file with formulas where I can add new courses and see the GPA update, and highlight which single course would raise my GPA most if I improved it.
What to change
- [GRADES OR TRANSCRIPT]: List course, grade and credits (e.g. "Biology, B+, 4"), or attach a transcript PDF or screenshot.
- [GRADING SCALE]: E.g. "4.0 scale with plus/minus (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3)", or "my school's scale is attached".
- [WEIGHTING RULE]: E.g. "+0.5 for honors, +1.0 for AP", or "no weighting" for most universities.
- [NEXT SEMESTER CREDITS]: E.g. "15". Use your planned course load.
- [TARGET GPA]: E.g. "3.5" for a scholarship or Dean's List, or the minimum for a program.
Example result
- Fall semester (4.0 scale with plus/minus)
- • AP Biology: A−, 4 credits → 3.7 × 4 = 14.8 (weighted 4.7 × 4 = 18.8)
- • Honors English: B+, 4 credits → 3.3 × 4 = 13.2 (weighted 3.8 × 4 = 15.2)
- • Precalculus: B, 4 credits → 3.0 × 4 = 12.0
- • Spanish III: A, 3 credits → 4.0 × 3 = 12.0
- • US History: B+, 4 credits → 3.3 × 4 = 13.2
- • Total: 19 credits, 65.2 grade points
- Semester GPA
- • Unweighted: 65.2 / 19 = 3.43
- • Weighted (+1.0 AP, +0.5 honors): 71.2 / 19 = 3.75
- Cumulative GPA
- • Previous: 3.25 over 57 credits = 185.25 grade points
- • New total: 185.25 + 65.2 = 250.45 over 76 credits
- • Cumulative unweighted GPA: 3.30
- What you need for a 3.5
- • Next semester: 18 credits, so 94 credits in total
- • Points needed: 3.5 × 94 = 329.0
- • You have 250.45, so you need 78.55 points from 18 credits
- • Required semester GPA: 4.36. Not possible next semester on a 4.0 scale.
- A realistic path
- • With straight A's for two more semesters (36 credits at 4.0), your cumulative unweighted GPA would be about 3.52.
- • A 3.4 next semester would raise you to about 3.32; a 3.7 to about 3.37.
- Biggest lever
- Precalculus (B, 4 credits) has the lowest grade points. If your school allows grade replacement on a retake, an A would add 4 grade points, raising your cumulative GPA by about 0.05.
- In the Excel file
- • Sheet 1: courses with grade, credits, weight and grade points (formulas)
- • Sheet 2: the scale, so you can edit it
- • Sheet 3: "what if" planner: enter target GPA and future credits to see the grades you need
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt, then add your grades or attach your transcript, your school's scale, weighting rule, next term's credits and your target.
- Send it in todo.is on the Today screen or to your agent on WhatsApp or Telegram.
- Read the breakdown and download the Excel file with formulas.
- Add new grades to the sheet yourself each term, or send them to your agent and ask for an updated GPA and target plan.
Tips for a better result
- Use your school's exact scale. Plus/minus values and A+ (4.0 or 4.3) differ between schools and change the result.
- Colleges often recalculate GPA their own way, many using unweighted core courses. Know both numbers.
- Credits matter as much as grades: a B in a 4-credit course pulls your GPA down more than in a 1-credit course.
- Check your school's rules on retakes and grade replacement before planning around them.
GPA calculator: FAQ
- How is GPA calculated? Multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by the total credits. Cumulative GPA does the same across all semesters, not an average of semester GPAs.
- What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA? Unweighted GPA uses the same scale for every course, usually up to 4.0. Weighted GPA adds extra points for harder courses like honors, AP or IB, so it can go above 4.0.
- Can it read my transcript? Yes, from a PDF or a screenshot. It lists the courses and grades it read so you can confirm them before the calculation.
- Can it convert my grades to a US GPA from another country? It can give an estimate using common conversion tables, but universities and credential evaluation services use their own methods, so treat it as a guide.
