IELTS writing checker: a band estimate and line-by-line feedback
You wrote a Task 2 essay but have no teacher to mark it, and you are not sure if it is a 6 or a 7. This prompt has your todo.is agent score it against the four public IELTS Writing criteria, mark every grammar and word-choice error, and rewrite one paragraph at the next band so you can see the difference.
The prompt
- Check my IELTS [TASK 1 OR TASK 2] essay. The question was: [PASTE THE QUESTION]. My essay: [PASTE YOUR ESSAY OR ATTACH A PHOTO]. My target is band [TARGET BAND]. Give me an estimated band for Task Response (or Task Achievement), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range and Accuracy, with two reasons for each. Count my words. List every error: what I wrote, the correction, and the rule. Rewrite my weakest paragraph at my target band and explain what changed. End with the 3 things that would raise my score most, and one new question of the same type for me to try next.
What to change
- [TASK 1 OR TASK 2]: "Task 1" (Academic graph or General letter) or "Task 2" (essay). Say Academic or General Training too.
- [PASTE THE QUESTION]: Copy the exact question. Your agent checks whether you answered every part of it.
- [PASTE YOUR ESSAY OR ATTACH A PHOTO]: Paste the text, or attach a clear photo of a handwritten essay; your agent reads it first.
- [TARGET BAND]: E.g. "7.0". Your agent focuses the feedback on what separates your level from that band.
Example result
- Your Task 2 essay: estimated band 6.0
- Question: Some people think governments should spend more on public transport than on roads. Discuss both views and give your opinion. · 268 words
- Scores by criterion
- • Task Response: 6.0. Both views are discussed, but your opinion only appears in the last line. State it in the introduction too.
- • Coherence and Cohesion: 6.0. Clear paragraphs, but "Firstly / Secondly / Moreover" are overused and paragraph 2 has two main ideas.
- • Lexical Resource: 6.5. Good topic words (congestion, commuters, infrastructure). Some wrong collocations.
- • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: 5.5. Mostly simple sentences; repeated article and agreement errors.
- Errors to fix
- • "the traffic jam is increase" → "traffic congestion is increasing" (continuous form needs -ing)
- • "make a pollution" → "cause pollution" (pollution is uncountable; "cause" is the natural verb)
- • "peoples" → "people" (already plural)
- • "In the other hand" → "On the other hand"
- • "government spend" → "governments spend" (agreement)
- Paragraph 2 rewritten at band 7
- Yours: Firstly, public transport is cheap. Moreover it make a pollution less. Many peoples use buses.
- Band 7 version: Those who favour public transport argue that it benefits far more people per dollar spent. A single bus line can carry thousands of commuters a day, and fewer cars on the road means less congestion and lower emissions in city centres.
- What changed: one clear main idea, a complex sentence with "Those who", a concrete example, and precise words instead of stacked linkers.
- Your 3 priorities
- • Give your opinion in the introduction and repeat it in the conclusion
- • Use 2–3 complex sentences per paragraph (relative clauses, "although", "if")
- • Check articles and plural -s before you finish
- Try this next
- Some people believe that cities should ban cars from the centre. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Tips for a better result
- Write by hand under time (40 minutes for Task 2) if your test is on paper, then photograph it. Typed practice hides spelling problems.
- Fix one error type per week. If articles are your weak point, ask your agent for a 10-sentence article drill each morning.
- Keep every marked essay in one chat so your agent can tell you which errors keep coming back.
- Do not memorise band 9 model essays. Examiners spot learned phrases, and they hurt Task Response when they do not fit the question.
IELTS writing checker: FAQ
- Is the band score official? No. It is an estimate based on the public band descriptors. Only certified IELTS examiners give official scores, but the estimate shows clearly what to work on.
- Can it check handwritten essays? Yes. Attach a clear photo of each page. Your agent reads the handwriting first and shows you the typed text so you can fix any word it misread.
- How many words does Task 2 need? At least 250 words for Task 2 and 150 for Task 1. Writing under the minimum can lower your Task Response score, so your agent always counts them.
- Does it work for General Training letters? Yes. Say "General Training Task 1" and paste the letter prompt. Your agent checks the tone (formal, semi-formal or informal) and that all three bullet points are covered.
