Grammar checker that fixes your text and explains why
Typos and small grammar slips make a good email, essay or report look careless. This prompt has your todo.is agent correct grammar, spelling, punctuation and word choice without rewriting your style, then give you a clean copy and a short list of every change with the rule behind it.
The prompt
- Check the grammar of this text: [TEXT OR ATTACHED FILE]. Use [ENGLISH VARIANT] spelling and punctuation. Fix grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, wrong words (like their/there, affect/effect) and sentences that are hard to follow. Do not change my style, my word choices or the meaning unless something is actually wrong, and do not make it more formal. Give me: 1) the corrected text, 2) a numbered list of every change with the original, the fix and a one-line reason, 3) the 3 mistakes I make most often so I can watch for them. If I attached a Word file, return a corrected Word file too. This is for [WHAT IT IS FOR].
What to change
- [TEXT OR ATTACHED FILE]: Paste your text or attach a Word file, PDF or a photo of a handwritten page.
- [ENGLISH VARIANT]: e.g. "US English", "UK English", "Australian English".
- [WHAT IT IS FOR]: e.g. "a job application email", "my thesis chapter", "a client report". Helps judge tone.
Example result
- Corrected text
- Dear Ms. Patel,
- Thank you for meeting with me on Tuesday. I really enjoyed learning about the team's plans for the new clinic, and I'm even more excited about the role now. As we discussed, I have attached my portfolio. It includes the two patient-education leaflets I mentioned.
- Please let me know if you need anything else from me.
- Best regards,
- Daniel Okafor
- Changes
- • 1. "meeting me in tuesday" → "meeting with me on Tuesday". Days of the week take "on" and a capital letter.
- • 2. "the teams plans" → "the team's plans". The plans belong to the team, so it needs an apostrophe.
- • 3. "I really enjoyed learning about the team's plans for the new clinic I'm even more excited" → split with ", and". Two full sentences were joined with no punctuation (a run-on).
- • 4. "As we discussed I have attached" → "As we discussed, I have attached". Use a comma after an introductory phrase.
- • 5. "my portfolio, it includes" → "my portfolio. It includes". A comma cannot join two full sentences (comma splice).
- • 6. "the two patient education leaflets" → "patient-education leaflets". Hyphenate two words that work together before a noun.
- • 7. "if you need anything else from me ." → removed the space before the period.
- Your 3 most common mistakes
- • Comma splices: joining two sentences with a comma. Use a period, a semicolon, or add "and" or "but".
- • Missing apostrophes: "team's", "client's", "it's" (only when it means "it is").
- • Missing comma after an opener: "As we discussed," "In March," "However,".
- Left unchanged on purpose
- • "I really enjoyed" is fine for a friendly follow-up, so it stays.
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt, choose US or UK English and paste or attach your text.
- Send it to your agent from the Today screen in todo.is or on WhatsApp, Telegram or email.
- Copy the corrected version or download the Word file, and read the change list to learn the rules.
- Ask "remember I use UK English and Oxford commas" so every future check follows your style.
Tips for a better result
- Pick one English variant and stick to it. Mixing "color" and "colour" in one document looks like a mistake.
- Read the change list, not just the clean copy. Seeing the same rule three times is how you stop making the mistake.
- For legal, medical or technical text, tell your agent which terms are correct as written so it does not "fix" them.
- Read the final version out loud once. Your ear catches missing words that a checker can miss.
grammar checker: FAQ
- Is a grammar checker always right? No. Grammar has style choices, and context matters. That is why this prompt lists every change with a reason, so you can reject the ones you disagree with.
- What is a comma splice? It is two complete sentences joined only by a comma, like "I called, nobody answered." Fix it with a period, a semicolon, or a word like "and" or "but".
- Can it check a Word document and keep the formatting? Yes. Attach the .docx and ask for a corrected Word file back. Headings, bold and lists are kept as they were.
- Can it check grammar in other languages? Yes, it works in many languages. Say which language and regional variant you want in the prompt.
