Letter of intent for a job, school or business deal
A letter of intent means different things in different places: interest in a job that is not posted, a statement for a graduate program, or a short note setting out the main terms of a deal. This prompt tells your todo.is agent which kind you need, researches the organization, and writes a focused letter with the right structure.
The prompt
- Write a letter of intent. Type: [JOB, SCHOOL OR BUSINESS DEAL]. It goes to [ORGANIZATION AND CONTACT NAME], website: [THEIR WEBSITE]. About me: [YOUR NAME AND SHORT BACKGROUND]. What I want: [WHAT YOU INTEND OR PROPOSE]. Read their website and mention one or two specific things that connect to my goal. Keep it to one page, about 300-400 words, with a clear opening that states my intent, 2 paragraphs of evidence, and a closing with a next step. If it is a business deal, list the key terms in bullets and add a line saying the letter is non-binding except where stated. Give me a Word file and a PDF.
What to change
- [JOB, SCHOOL OR BUSINESS DEAL]: "Job" (interest in a role), "school" (graduate program or school admission) or "business deal" (purchase, partnership, lease).
- [ORGANIZATION AND CONTACT NAME]: E.g. "Greenfield Architects, Ms Ana Ruiz" or "Admissions, MSc Environmental Policy".
- [THEIR WEBSITE]: Their website, so your agent can read about them.
- [YOUR NAME AND SHORT BACKGROUND]: E.g. "Leo Park, 4 years in urban planning, fluent in Spanish".
- [WHAT YOU INTEND OR PROPOSE]: E.g. "join your Lisbon office as a planner" or "buy the café equipment and lease for an agreed price".

- Ms Ana Ruiz
- Studio Director, Greenfield Architects
- Dear Ms Ruiz,
- I am writing to express my intent to join Greenfield Architects as an urban planner in your Lisbon office. I know you have no open planning role right now, but your work on the Marvila riverside plan is exactly the kind of project I want to spend the next part of my career on.
- I have four years of experience in urban planning at a mid-size firm in Valencia. I led the public consultation for a 12-hectare neighborhood plan, ran workshops with over 300 residents, and turned their feedback into a design brief the city approved on the first review. I work daily in QGIS and AutoCAD, and I speak Spanish, English and conversational Portuguese.
- Your site says Greenfield wants to grow its community engagement work. That is where I add the most value. I enjoy the slow, careful part of planning: listening to residents, explaining trade-offs and making sure the final plan reflects what people need.
- I would welcome a 20-minute call to learn about your plans for the Lisbon team and to share examples of my consultation work. I have attached my resume and portfolio.
- Thank you for your time.
- Kind regards,
- Leo Park

Tips for a better result
- For a job LOI, write to a named person, not a general inbox. Ask your agent to find the right contact on the company's team page.
- For a school LOI, check the program's instructions. Some want a specific length or set questions, and those always win over a general template.
- For a business LOI, keep price, dates and conditions in bullets so both sides can see the terms at a glance.
- Business letters of intent can create obligations. Have a lawyer read anything involving money or property before you sign.
letter of intent: FAQ
- Is a letter of intent legally binding? Usually not, if it says so clearly, but some clauses like confidentiality or exclusivity can be binding. For deals that matter, ask a lawyer to check it.
- What is the difference between a letter of intent and a cover letter? A cover letter applies for a specific open job. A letter of intent shows interest in a company or program, often when no job is posted.
- How long should a letter of intent be? One page for jobs and most deals. Graduate programs sometimes allow up to two pages, so check their instructions.
- Can my agent send the letter? With Google connected it can save the email as a Gmail draft with the PDF attached. It asks for your OK before sending.
