Cover letter generator that writes for the job you want
Hiring managers spot a copy-paste cover letter in the first line. This prompt has your todo.is agent read the job ad and the company’s own website, then write a short letter that links your real experience to what they need.
The prompt
- Write a cover letter for the [JOB TITLE] role at [COMPANY NAME]. Here is the job ad: [JOB POSTING LINK]. My background: [PASTE YOUR RESUME OR A FEW LINES ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE]. Look at the company website to find one thing they care about right now and mention it. Keep it under 350 words, in a [TONE] tone, with a clear opening line (no "I am writing to apply"), two short paragraphs that match my experience to their needs, and a direct closing. Give me a Word file and the same text in the chat so I can paste it into a form.
What to change
- [JOB TITLE]: The exact title from the ad, e.g. "Customer Success Manager".
- [COMPANY NAME]: The company you are applying to. Your agent uses it to look up their website and news.
- [JOB POSTING LINK]: A link to the job ad, or paste the full description if the page needs a login.
- [PASTE YOUR RESUME OR A FEW LINES ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE]: Paste your resume text, or attach your resume file instead. Bullet notes are fine.
- [TONE]: For example "warm and confident", "formal", or "friendly startup".

- Dear Hiring Team at Fernway,
- When I read that Fernway just opened a self-serve plan for small clinics, my first thought was: those customers will need a lot of hand-holding in their first 30 days. That is the work I have done for the past four years, and I would love to do it for you as your next Customer Success Manager.
- At Medilink, I looked after 140 small practices on a monthly plan. I rebuilt our onboarding into three short calls and a checklist, which cut the time to first booking from 19 days to 8. Churn in the first quarter dropped from 11% to 6% over the next year.
- Your ad asks for someone who can turn support tickets into product feedback. Every month I sent our product team a one-page summary of the top five requests, and two of them became features that customers now mention in reviews. I am also comfortable in HubSpot and Intercom, which your team already uses.
- I would be glad to show you the onboarding checklist I built and talk about how a similar plan could work for Fernway’s new customers. Thank you for reading.
- Best regards,
- Daniel Okafor
- Why this works
- • The opening line is about their news, not about the applicant
- • Each paragraph answers one line from the job ad
- • Numbers make the claims easy to believe
- • Under 350 words, so it fits on one page
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and fill in each [bracket] with the job and your details.
- Paste it on the todo.is Today screen, or send it to your agent in WhatsApp, Telegram or by email.
- Your agent reads the ad and the company site, then gives you a Word file plus plain text for online forms.
- Reply with edits such as "shorter", "more formal" or "mention my Spanish", and it rewrites the letter.
Tips
- Name the hiring manager if you know it. Add "address it to [NAME]" and the letter feels personal right away.
- Attach your resume file once. Your agent keeps it in your workspace, so for the next job you only send the new link.
- If you write in a second language, ask for "simple, natural English" so it sounds like you.
- Ask for a 3-sentence version too. Many application forms have a short "Why us?" box.
FAQ
- How long should a cover letter be? Aim for 250 to 400 words, which fits on one page. Recruiters skim, so three or four short paragraphs work better than a full page of text.
- Do I still need a cover letter in 2026? Many jobs list it as optional, but a short, specific letter still helps when the role gets lots of applicants or when you are changing careers.
- Will the letter sound like AI wrote it? The prompt bans stock openings and asks for real details from the job ad and the company site. Read it once and change any phrase you would not say yourself.
- Can I get a PDF instead of Word? Yes. Add "also give me a PDF" to the to-do and your agent creates both files.
