A Muscat itinerary that reaches the wadis and the desert
Most of Oman's best days out start in Muscat but end a two-hour drive away. Wadi Shab, the Bimmah Sinkhole, Nizwa and the Wahiba Sands all need an early start and a car. Paste this prompt and your todo.is agent plans the city days, the drives and the swim stops in an order that makes sense.
The prompt
- Plan a [NUMBER OF DAYS]-day Muscat itinerary for [WHO IS TRAVELLING] in [MONTH]. We're [TRANSPORT]. In the city include the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque (morning visiting hours), Mutrah Corniche and Souq, Old Muscat and Al Alam Palace, and the Royal Opera House. Then add [DAY TRIPS] with driving times, swim stops and what to pack. Keep the hottest hours for the hotel or a beach. Tell me where to sleep if a trip needs an overnight, with 2 or 3 options and links. Add one seafood or shuwa dinner idea and one dhow or dolphin boat trip. Email me a PDF and send a summary on Telegram. Don't book anything.
What to change
- [NUMBER OF DAYS]: E.g. "5". Three days for Muscat and one wadi; five or more to add Nizwa and the desert.
- [WHO IS TRAVELLING]: E.g. "two friends who like hiking", "family with kids aged 8 and 11".
- [MONTH]: E.g. "December". October to April is best; June to August is very hot.
- [TRANSPORT]: E.g. "renting a car", "using taxis and day tours", "hiring a driver".
- [DAY TRIPS]: E.g. "Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole, a night in Wahiba Sands, Nizwa Fort", or "suggest the best ones".
Example result
- Muscat in 5 days, two friends with a rental car
- December · city, wadis, one desert night
- Day 1: Mosque and Mutrah
- • Morning: Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Visitor hours are mornings only, not on Fridays. Arms and legs covered; women also cover their hair.
- • Afternoon: rest or swim at Qurum Beach.
- • Evening: walk the Mutrah Corniche at sunset, then get lost in Mutrah Souq for frankincense, silver and halwa.
- Day 2: Old Muscat and the sea
- • Morning: Al Alam Palace (from outside), the Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts, the Bait Al Zubair museum.
- • Afternoon: a dolphin-watching or snorkelling boat from the marina toward the Daymaniyat side or Bandar Khayran.
- • Evening: a show or a walk around the Royal Opera House, then grilled fish.
- Day 3: Coast road to the wadis
- • Early start on the coast road (about 1.5 hours to Wadi Shab).
- • Bimmah Sinkhole on the way: a turquoise pool in a limestone hollow, good for a short swim.
- • Wadi Shab: short boat across, hike about 45 minutes, then swim through pools to the cave. Bring a dry bag and water shoes.
- • Drive inland to the Wahiba Sands (about 2 hours). Many camps meet you at the edge of the sand for the last stretch in a 4x4.
- Day 4: Desert to Nizwa
- • Sunrise on the dunes, then drive to Nizwa (about 2.5 hours).
- • Nizwa Fort and the souq; the Friday morning goat market is worth timing if you can.
- • Optional: Jabal Akhdar or the mud-brick village of Al Hamra.
- Day 5: Back to Muscat
- • Bahla Fort on the way if not done, then about 1.5 hours to Muscat for your flight.
- Good to know
- • Drive with care in the wadis after rain; flash floods happen.
- • A 4x4 is needed on sand and some mountain roads, including Jabal Akhdar.
- • Check visiting hours and any entry fees on official sites before you go.
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and add your days, month, transport and the trips you want.
- Send it to your todo.is agent from the Today screen or by Telegram or WhatsApp.
- You get a PDF with city days, road days, driving times and camp options, plus a short summary.
- Ask for edits ("skip Nizwa, add a second beach day") and book cars and camps yourself.
Tips for a better result
- Visit the Grand Mosque on your first free morning. Non-Muslim visiting hours are short and it is closed to visitors on Fridays.
- Start Wadi Shab early. The car park and the first pools get busy by late morning, and the hike is hot at midday.
- For the desert, ask your agent to compare camps by how far into the sand they are and whether they offer a 4x4 pick-up.
- Tell your agent if you are not comfortable driving off-road. It will route you via tours or a driver instead.
Muscat itinerary: FAQ
- How many days do you need in Muscat? Two days is enough for the city itself. Plan four to six days if you want to add the wadis, the Wahiba Sands and Nizwa.
- Do you need a 4x4 in Oman? Not for Muscat or the coast road to Wadi Shab. You need one for driving on the sand and for the Jabal Akhdar mountain road.
- When is the best time to visit Muscat? October to April, when it is warm but not extreme. Summer is very hot and humid on the coast.
- Can my agent check the weather before the wadi day? Yes. Ask for a morning weather check on that date sent to WhatsApp or Telegram, so you know about rain or flood warnings.
