Norway fjords itinerary: Bergen, Flåm, Geiranger and the big hikes
Fjord Norway is a jigsaw of trains, car ferries and mountain roads that only open in summer. Pick the wrong order and you spend the day backtracking. This prompt asks your todo.is agent to plan a fjords route from Bergen with drive or train times, ferry crossings, the best viewpoints and the classic hikes that fit your fitness.
The prompt
- Plan a Norway fjords itinerary for [NUMBER OF DAYS] days, [TRAVEL DATES], for [WHO IS TRAVELLING], starting and ending in [START CITY]. We'll travel by [TRANSPORT]. Include Bergen, the Nærøyfjord and the Flåm Railway, and Geirangerfjord with the Eagle Road and Dalsnibba viewpoint. Tell me if Trollstigen and mountain roads are open on our dates. Add [HIKES] only if they suit [FITNESS]. List every car ferry crossing and whether we can just drive on. Suggest a fjord-side place to sleep each night and a rainy-day plan. Send a PDF with the route, times, ferries and links, plus an Excel sheet with daily distances. Don't book anything.

- [WHO IS TRAVELLING]: E.g. "couple", "family with kids 8 and 12", "two keen hikers".
- [START CITY]: E.g. "Bergen", "Oslo", "Ålesund".
- [TRANSPORT]: E.g. "rental car", "trains and boats only", "campervan".
- [HIKES]: E.g. "Preikestolen", "Trolltunga", "Kjeragbolten", "short waterfall walks".
- [FITNESS]: E.g. "we walk 6 to 8 km", "we can do a 10-hour hike".
Example result
- Norway fjords in 8 days, couple, rental car from Bergen
- Views, hiking, scenic roads · early July

- • Pick up the car at the end of the day (central Bergen parking is costly).
- Day 2: Voss and Nærøyfjord to Flåm
- • Drive via Voss to Gudvangen (about 2 hours). Fjord cruise on the narrow Nærøyfjord (UNESCO) to Flåm, or drive and take a shorter boat trip.

- Good to know
- • Car ferries mostly run drive-on, no booking. Tolls are charged automatically by plate.

- • Road status and ferry links are in the PDF; check the Norwegian roads authority before you drive.

Tips for a better result
- Build the loop in one direction to avoid backtracking: Bergen, Flåm, glacier, Geiranger, Ålesund.
- Trolltunga is a 10 to 12 hour hike. Only do it in summer, with good weather and an early start, or with a guide.
- Book a fjord-side night in Geiranger or Flåm. Evenings after the cruise ships leave are magical.
- Ask your agent for a daily morning message with the weather and road status for that day's drive.
Norway fjords itinerary: FAQ
- How many days do you need for the Norway fjords? A week covers Bergen, Nærøyfjord, Flåm and Geirangerfjord. Ten days lets you add Preikestolen, Trolltunga or Ålesund at a slower pace.
- Can you see the fjords without a car? Yes. Norway in a Nutshell combines trains, a fjord ferry and buses from Bergen or Oslo. A car gives more freedom for Geiranger and Trollstigen.
- When is the best time to visit the Norwegian fjords? June to August has long days and open mountain roads. May and September are quieter, but some roads and hikes may still be snowy or closed.
- Is Trolltunga or Preikestolen easier? Preikestolen is much easier: about 4 hours return. Trolltunga takes 10 to 12 hours and needs good fitness and weather.
