A net worth tracker you actually update every month
Checking six apps to see if you're getting ahead is tiring, so most people never do it. This prompt has your todo.is agent build one Excel sheet with every asset and debt, a monthly history and a trend chart, then remind you on the 1st to send the new balances.
The prompt
- Create a net worth tracker in Excel (.xlsx). My assets are [ASSETS AND BALANCES] and my debts are [DEBTS AND BALANCES]. Make a Balances tab with one row per account (type, institution, current balance, liquid yes/no), a History tab with one column per month starting [START MONTH], and a Dashboard tab with total assets, total debts, net worth, change since last month, and a line chart of net worth over time. Split assets into cash, investments, retirement and property, and show the share of each. Use [CURRENCY]. Then set a recurring reminder on the 1st of every month at 9:00 on [WHERE TO REMIND ME] asking me for the new balances, and when I reply, add the month to the sheet and send me the updated file with a one-line summary.
What to change
- [ASSETS AND BALANCES]: E.g. "checking 3,200; savings 12,000; brokerage 18,500; 401(k) 41,000; home est. 310,000". Or attach screenshots of your balances.
- [DEBTS AND BALANCES]: E.g. "mortgage 248,000; car loan 9,400; credit card 1,150; student loan 14,200".
- [START MONTH]: The first month to track, e.g. "October 2026". Add older months if you have the numbers.
- [CURRENCY]: E.g. "USD" or "EUR".
- [WHERE TO REMIND ME]: WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord or email.
Example result
- Net_Worth_Tracker.xlsx, October 2026
- All figures in USD, balances as you gave them
- Dashboard
- • Total assets: 405,000
- • Total debts: 272,750
- • Net worth: 132,250
- • Change since September: +2,140 (+1.6%)
- Assets by type
- • Cash (checking, savings): 15,200 · 3.8%
- • Investments (brokerage): 18,500 · 4.6%
- • Retirement (401(k), IRA): 61,300 · 15.1%
- • Property (home, estimated value): 310,000 · 76.5%
- Debts
- • Mortgage 248,000 · car loan 9,400 · student loan 14,200 · credit card 1,150
- What the numbers say
- • Home equity (310,000 - 248,000 = 62,000) is 47% of your net worth. Without it, you're at 70,250. Equity is real but not easy to spend.
- • Liquid net worth (cash + investments - credit card) is 32,550
- • The credit card is the most expensive debt; clearing it first is the quickest win
- History tab
- • Aug 2026: 127,900
- • Sep 2026: 130,110
- • Oct 2026: 132,250
- Monthly routine
- • On the 1st at 9:00 you get a WhatsApp message: "Time for your net worth update. Send the balances that changed."
- • Reply in one line ("savings 12,600, 401k 41,900, card 0") and you get the updated file and the change since last month
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and list your accounts with today's balances, or attach screenshots of them.
- Paste it into todo.is, or send it to your agent on WhatsApp or Telegram.
- Your agent builds the Excel tracker and sets the monthly reminder.
- Each month, reply with only the balances that changed. The sheet, chart and summary update for you.
Tips for a better result
- Use a conservative estimate for your home and car and update it once a year, not every month. Market swings in a home estimate hide real progress.
- Track liquid net worth too. It tells you how long you could cover a job loss.
- Measure on the same day each month, ideally after payday, so changes are comparable.
- Ask your agent to add a goal line, e.g. "net worth 200,000 by end of 2028", to see if you're on track.
net worth tracker: FAQ
- What counts as an asset in a net worth tracker? Cash, investments, retirement accounts and property you could sell, at today's value. Leave out everyday items like furniture and clothes, which are hard to value and rarely sold.
- Should I include my house in my net worth? Yes, at a realistic value, with the mortgage listed as a debt. Many people also track net worth without the home to see their liquid progress.
- How often should I update my net worth? Monthly or quarterly is enough. Daily checks mostly show market noise.
- Does todo.is connect to my bank accounts? No. You send the balances or screenshots, and your agent does the math and keeps the history. Files stay in your own agent workspace.
