Word to Excel converter that moves tables and lists into clean rows
Someone sent a price list, a schedule or a contact list as a Word document, and you need to sort, filter or total it. Copy and paste gives you merged cells, numbers stuck as text and line breaks that split one row into three. Your todo.is agent pulls the tables and lists out of the .docx and rebuilds them as a proper spreadsheet.
The prompt
- Move the data from the attached Word document into Excel: [ATTACH THE .DOCX]. Take [WHAT TO EXTRACT]. Put each table on its own sheet named after the heading above it. Keep one row per record even if a cell has line breaks, and split merged cells so every row has its own value. Make numbers and dates real numbers and dates. For lists written as text (like "Name – phone – email"), split them into columns: [COLUMNS]. Freeze headers, add filters and send the .xlsx.
What to change
- [ATTACH THE .DOCX]: Attach a .docx or .doc file. A Word file saved from Google Docs works too.
- [WHAT TO EXTRACT]: E.g. "all tables", "only the price table in section 3" or "the member list".
- [COLUMNS]: E.g. "Name, Role, Phone, Email" or "no text lists, only tables".
Example result
- Word to Excel: Club_Handbook_2026.docx
- 32 pages · 5 tables + 1 text list · 6 sheets
- Sheets created
- • Membership fees (table, page 4): 8 rows · Category, Annual fee, Monthly fee, Joining fee
- • Training schedule (table, pages 6 to 7): 24 rows · Day, Time, Group, Coach, Pitch
- • Kit prices (table, page 9): 15 rows · Item, Size range, Price
- • Committee (table, page 2): 9 rows · Role, Name, Email, Phone
- • Match calendar (table, pages 12 to 14): 30 rows · Date, Opponent, Home/Away, Kick-off
- • Members (text list, pages 20 to 31): 212 rows · Name, Team, Phone, Email
- Fixes made
- • Merged cells: the "Day" column in Training schedule spanned 3 to 4 rows per day. Split so every row has its day, which makes filtering by day work
- • Line breaks in cells: "Under 12s\n(Girls)" stayed in one cell as "Under 12s (Girls)" instead of becoming two rows
- • Numbers: "£120.00 / year" became 120.00 in a currency column; the "/ year" moved to the column header
- • Dates: "Sat 14th March" became 14/03/2026
- • Text list: lines like "Priya Shah – U14 Girls – 07700 900123 – priya@example.com" were split on the dashes into 4 columns
- Rows to check
- • 3 member lines had no email and 1 had two phone numbers; the second number went into a Notes column
- What stays in Word
- Normal paragraphs, headings and images are not moved, only the tables and the list you asked for. Ask if you want any paragraph text in a sheet too.
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and say which tables or lists to move.
- Attach the Word file in todo.is or send it to your agent on WhatsApp.
- Your agent extracts the data, fixes merged cells and splits text lists into columns.
- Download the .xlsx. Ask for a total row or a sorted copy to keep going.
Tips for a better result
- If data is written as lines of text, show the pattern, like "Name – Team – Phone". Your agent splits on it reliably.
- Name the tables by their heading or page number in long documents.
- Need the reverse later? The Excel to Word prompt turns the cleaned sheet back into a formatted table.
- If a table has a total row, ask your agent to check it. It confirms nothing was dropped.
Word to Excel converter: FAQ
- How do I convert a Word table to Excel? Attach the Word file and say which tables you need. Your agent rebuilds each one as a sheet with real numbers and dates.
- Why does pasting a Word table into Excel break rows? Line breaks inside a Word cell are pasted as new rows, and merged cells paste as blanks. Your agent keeps each record on one row and fills merged values.
- Can it convert a list that is not in a table? Yes. Lists with a clear pattern, like name, phone and email on each line, are split into columns.
- Can I convert a Google Doc? Download it as .docx and attach it, or connect Google so your agent can read it from your Drive.
