Credit report dispute letter to fix errors with the bureaus
A late payment you never made, an account that is not yours, an old debt still showing: errors on a credit report can cost you a loan or an apartment. This prompt has your todo.is agent write a clear dispute letter to the credit bureau listing each error, why it is wrong and what you want changed, with your proof attached.
The prompt
- Write a credit report dispute letter (US) to [CREDIT BUREAU]. I am [YOUR NAME, ADDRESS AND DATE OF BIRTH]. The report date is [REPORT DATE]. These items are wrong: [EACH ERROR, ACCOUNT NAME AND WHY IT IS WRONG]. My proof: [EVIDENCE YOU WILL ATTACH]. Ask them to investigate and to correct or delete each item, and to send me the results and an updated report. Read the bureau's official dispute page and the CFPB guidance and give me the links and the current mailing address. One page per bureau, numbered list of disputed items, Word and PDF, plus a checklist of what to enclose.
What to change
- [CREDIT BUREAU]: Equifax, Experian or TransUnion. Write "all three" for one letter each.
- [YOUR NAME, ADDRESS AND DATE OF BIRTH]: Full name, current address and date of birth, as the bureau has them. Add a previous address if you moved recently.
- [REPORT DATE]: The date printed on your credit report, e.g. "1 October 2026".
- [EACH ERROR, ACCOUNT NAME AND WHY IT IS WRONG]: E.g. "Harbor Card account ending 4417 shows 30 days late in March 2026; I paid on time on 2 March". List each item.
- [EVIDENCE YOU WILL ATTACH]: E.g. "bank statement showing payment on 2 March, copy of ID, proof of address". Or attach them.

- Re: Dispute of information on my credit report dated 1 October 2026
- To whom it may concern,
- I am writing to dispute the following information on my credit report. I have circled the items on the enclosed copy of my report.
- 1. Harbor Card, account ending 4417
- The report shows a 30-day late payment for March 2026. This is incorrect. I paid the full balance on 2 March 2026, before the due date. A bank statement showing the payment is enclosed. Please correct the payment history to show this account as paid on time.
- 2. Midtown Collections, account ending 0921
- This account is not mine. I have never had an account with the original creditor listed, Lumen Electric, and I have never lived at the service address shown. Please delete this account from my report.
- Please investigate these items and correct or delete the information that cannot be verified. Please send me the results of your investigation and a free updated copy of my report.
- Sincerely,
- Priya Raman
- Enclosures
- 1. Copy of my credit report with disputed items circled
- 2. Bank statement showing payment on 2 March 2026
- 3. Copy of driver's license
- 4. Utility bill showing my current address
- Before you send it
- • Get your reports free at the official AnnualCreditReport.com site and compare all three
- • Send one letter to each bureau that shows the error
- • Use certified mail with return receipt, or the bureau's online dispute form
- • Also consider disputing directly with the company that reported the item
- • If an account is not yours at all, check for identity theft and consider a fraud alert or freeze
- What happens next
- Bureaus generally have 30 days to investigate (sometimes up to 45) and must send you the results. If the error stays, you can add a statement to your file or complain to the CFPB. This is a draft, not legal advice.
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and list each error exactly as it appears on your report.
- Paste it on the todo.is Today screen and attach your credit report PDF and any proof.
- Your agent finds the official dispute addresses and writes one clear letter per bureau.
- Ask it for a 35-day reminder to check whether the bureau has replied.
Tips for a better result
- One item per numbered point, each with the account name, the last 4 digits and why it is wrong.
- Attach copies of proof, never originals. Keep your own complete set.
- Dispute with each bureau that shows the error. They do not share corrections automatically.
- Avoid generic template letters that dispute everything. Specific, documented disputes are more likely to be fixed.
- Your report and ID stay in your own agent workspace. Only attach what the bureau needs.
credit report dispute letter: FAQ
- How long does a credit report dispute take? Credit bureaus usually have 30 days to investigate a dispute, and sometimes up to 45 days. They must send you the results in writing.
- Is it better to dispute online or by mail? Both work. Online is faster, while mail with return receipt gives you a clear paper trail and lets you include detailed evidence.
- Can I dispute negative items that are accurate? You can only have inaccurate or unverifiable information removed. Accurate negative items generally stay for a set period, often up to seven years.
- Should I also contact the creditor? Yes, it often helps. You can dispute directly with the company that reported the information as well as the bureau.
