Essay grader that scores your work against the rubric
You want to know if your essay is a B or an A before your teacher does. Attach the rubric and your draft, and this prompt has your todo.is agent score each criterion, quote the lines that earned or lost marks, and tell you the two changes most likely to lift your grade.
The prompt
- Grade my essay like a strict but fair teacher: [ESSAY]. Use this rubric: [RUBRIC]. Course and level: [COURSE AND LEVEL]. For each rubric criterion, give a score, quote 1 or 2 lines from my essay that justify it, and say exactly what would move it to the next band. Then give an overall estimated grade as [GRADING SCALE], the 2 changes with the biggest effect on the grade, and one thing I did well. Be honest, not generous. Don't rewrite my paragraphs. Put it in a one-page PDF I can keep with my draft.
What to change
- [ESSAY]: Attach the essay as Word or PDF, or paste it.
- [RUBRIC]: Attach or paste your teacher's rubric. No rubric? Write "use a standard rubric for thesis, evidence, analysis, organization and style".
- [COURSE AND LEVEL]: e.g. "AP English Language, grade 11" or "second-year history, university".
- [GRADING SCALE]: e.g. "a letter grade", "a percentage", "UK marks out of 100", "IB 1 to 7".
Example result
- Estimated grade: B+ (87 / 100)
- AP English Language · rhetorical analysis essay · rubric: 5 criteria, 20 points each
- Scores by criterion
- • Thesis (17/20). "Lincoln uses repetition to unite his audience" is clear but only names one device. *Next band:* name the rhetorical purpose too, e.g. what he wants the audience to feel or do.
- • Evidence (18/20). Well-chosen quotes in every body paragraph. *Next band:* one more quote in paragraph 3, which relies on a single line.
- • Analysis (15/20). Quote: "This shows he is being repetitive." You name the device but do not explain its effect. *Next band:* after each quote, answer "so what?" in one or two sentences.
- • Organization (20/20). Clear topic sentences and smooth transitions.
- • Style and conventions (17/20). Mostly clean. Three comma splices and a shift to "you" in paragraph 4.
- The 2 changes with the biggest effect
- 1. Add effect-focused analysis after each quote in paragraphs 2 and 3. This criterion is your lowest and the easiest to raise.
- 2. Revise the thesis to name the purpose and the audience. A sharper thesis also helps the analysis score.
- What you did well
- • Your conclusion links the speech to its moment in history without just repeating the introduction.
- How this estimate works
- • Scored only against the rubric you sent
- • Your teacher may weigh criteria differently, so treat this as a guide, not a final grade
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and add your essay, the rubric and your course.
- Send it to your todo.is agent from the Today screen or on WhatsApp, with both files attached.
- Read the scores with the quoted lines: they show exactly why each mark was given.
- Revise, then send the new draft and ask for a regrade to see if the weak criteria moved.
Tips for a better result
- Use the real rubric. A grade estimated against a generic rubric can be far from what your teacher gives.
- Ask for "strict" grading. A kind score feels good but does not tell you what to fix.
- Focus on the lowest criterion first. Moving 15 to 18 is easier than moving 18 to 20.
- Teachers can use it too: grade a sample essay to calibrate, then check your own judgment against it.
essay grader: FAQ
- How accurate is an AI essay grader? It is a useful estimate when it uses your actual rubric, but teachers weigh things differently. Use it to find weak spots, not to predict an exact grade.
- Can teachers use this to grade a class set? Yes, as a first pass. Send the essays and the rubric and your agent returns scores and comments in a spreadsheet, but a teacher should review every grade before it counts.
- What if I don't have a rubric? Ask for a standard rubric for your level, covering thesis, evidence, analysis, organization and conventions. For exams like AP or IB, your agent can look up the public scoring guidelines.
- Is using an essay grader cheating? Getting feedback on your own draft is usually fine, but rules differ. Check your school's AI policy, and do the revisions yourself.
