Iceland itinerary: Golden Circle, South Coast or the Ring Road
In Iceland the big decision is how far to drive. A week can cover the South Coast well or the whole Ring Road in a rush, and winter changes everything. This prompt gives your todo.is agent your days, season and driving comfort, and gets back a realistic route with drive times, overnight stops and a backup for bad weather.
The prompt
- Plan an Iceland itinerary for [NUMBER OF DAYS] days, [TRAVEL DATES], for [WHO IS TRAVELLING]. We will [TRANSPORT], starting and ending at Keflavík airport. Choose a route that fits our days: Golden Circle, South Coast to Jökulsárlón, Snæfellsnes, or the full Ring Road if we have time. Keep driving under [MAX DRIVING HOURS] hours a day and list drive times between stops. Suggest one area to sleep each night with a few lodging links. Include one geothermal pool and [ACTIVITIES]. Add a bad-weather plan for each day and links to the official road and weather sites. Put it all in a PDF and an Excel sheet with daily distances. Don't book anything.
What to change
- [NUMBER OF DAYS]: E.g. "7". 4 to 5 days for the south, 8 to 10 for the full Ring Road.
- [TRAVEL DATES]: E.g. "2 to 9 September". Winter means short days and possible road closures.
- [WHO IS TRAVELLING]: E.g. "couple", "family with kids 6 and 9", "two friends who like hiking".
- [TRANSPORT]: E.g. "rent a car", "rent a campervan", "use day tours from Reykjavík, no driving".
- [MAX DRIVING HOURS]: E.g. "3" or "4". Stops for photos add a lot of time.
- [ACTIVITIES]: E.g. "a glacier hike with a guide, whale watching, northern lights hunting".

- Book lodging early along the South Coast in summer. Rooms are scarce outside towns.
- In winter, plan fewer kilometres per day and keep a spare day for storms.
- Ask your agent for a recurring 7:00 message during the trip with that day's road and weather check links.
- Fuel stations get far apart in the east and north. Ask your agent to mark them on the route.
Iceland itinerary: FAQ
- How many days do you need for the Iceland Ring Road? At least 7 days, but 9 to 10 days is more comfortable. With fewer days, focus on the Golden Circle and South Coast.
- Can you drive the Ring Road in winter? Often yes, but storms can close roads and daylight is short. A 4x4, winter driving experience and flexible plans are strongly recommended.
- Can I see Iceland without a car? Yes. Base yourself in Reykjavík and take day tours for the Golden Circle, South Coast and northern lights. Your agent can find tour options with links.
- When can you see the northern lights in Iceland? Roughly from September to April, on clear, dark nights away from city lights. Sightings are never guaranteed.
