Mechanic cover letter for shops, dealerships and fleets
Service managers want to know three things: what you can fix, how fast and how often it comes back. This prompt has your todo.is agent read the shop's job ad and the brands they service, then write a short letter that leads with your ASE certifications, the diagnostic tools you use and numbers like flagged hours.
The prompt
- Write a cover letter for the [JOB TITLE] job at [SHOP, DEALERSHIP OR FLEET NAME]. Job ad: [JOB POSTING LINK OR TEXT]. My experience: [YEARS, VEHICLE TYPES, ASE OR OTHER CERTIFICATIONS, TOOLS]. Check the shop's website for the makes they service and the work they focus on (diagnostics, EV/hybrid, diesel, fleet, quick service). Write under 300 words: open with my certifications and specialty, then one paragraph with 2 results ([YOUR BEST NUMBERS, E.G. FLAGGED HOURS OR COMEBACK RATE]), then a line about my own tools and willingness to train on their brand. Practical, no-nonsense tone. Give me a Word file and the text for an online form.
What to change
- [JOB TITLE]: e.g. "Automotive Technician", "Diesel Mechanic" or "Lube Tech".
- [SHOP, DEALERSHIP OR FLEET NAME]: e.g. "Harbor Toyota" or "Metro Transit fleet maintenance".
- [JOB POSTING LINK OR TEXT]: Link to the ad, or paste the job text.
- [YEARS, VEHICLE TYPES, ASE OR OTHER CERTIFICATIONS, TOOLS]: e.g. "6 years, domestic and Asian cars, ASE A1–A8, Snap-on Zeus, Autel", or attach your resume.
- [YOUR BEST NUMBERS, E.G. FLAGGED HOURS OR COMEBACK RATE]: e.g. "flag 50+ hours a week, under 2% comebacks".

- Dear Mr. Patel,
- I am an ASE Master Certified technician (A1 to A8) with six years of experience in independent and dealer shops, and I would like to join the service team at Harbor Toyota. I hold the L1 Advanced Engine Performance certification and completed hybrid high-voltage safety training last year.
- At Puget Auto Care, I handle most of the drivability and electrical work. I use a Snap-on Zeus and an Autel MaxiSys for diagnostics and I am comfortable reading wiring diagrams and running voltage drop tests. Two numbers I am proud of:
- • I average 52 flagged hours a week across a mix of diagnostics and repair
- • My comeback rate has stayed under 2% for the last two years
- I saw in your ad that you are adding hybrid work as more Prius and RAV4 Hybrid owners come in. That is the work I enjoy most, and I am ready to complete Toyota's TEN training levels as soon as possible.
- I have a full set of my own tools and a clean driving record. I keep my bay clean and write clear repair notes, so service advisors can explain the work to customers. I would be glad to come in for a working interview.
- Thank you,
- Tomas Nowak
- Why this works
- • Certifications and tools are named exactly, so screening software and managers find them
- • Flagged hours and comeback rate are the numbers service managers care about
- • It ties his hybrid skills to what the dealer needs now
- • Offering a working interview shows confidence

Tips for a better result
- List ASE tests by code (A1 to A9, L1, T-series for trucks). Managers scan for them.
- Name your scan tools and software, like Snap-on, Autel, Techstream, ALLDATA or Mitchell 1.
- Flagged hours, efficiency and comeback rate are stronger than "hard working".
- Mention your own toolbox and a valid driver's license if the job ad asks for them.
- For dealer jobs, say you will complete the manufacturer training path.
mechanic cover letter: FAQ
- What should a mechanic cover letter include? Your certifications (ASE or national equivalent), vehicle types and specialties, diagnostic tools, a couple of results like flagged hours or comeback rate, and whether you have your own tools.
- Do mechanics need a cover letter? Small shops often hire from a quick chat, but dealerships and fleets use online applications where a short letter helps you stand out from other techs.
- How do I write a mechanic cover letter with no experience? Lead with your automotive program, any ASE entry-level certification, and hands-on work like your own car projects or a lube tech job. Say you are eager to learn under a senior technician.
- Should I mention pay in my cover letter? Usually not. Discuss flat-rate versus hourly pay in the interview once they are interested.
