Mood board maker: a one-page visual direction for your project
Before a rebrand, a room makeover or a photo shoot, everyone needs to picture the same thing. This prompt has your todo.is agent turn your words and reference photos into a clean one-page mood board: a hero image, supporting images, a colour palette with hex codes, textures, type suggestions and a few words that sum up the feel.
The prompt
- Make a mood board for [PROJECT]. The feeling I want: [MOOD WORDS]. Avoid: [WHAT TO AVOID]. References: [REFERENCES]. Lay it out as one landscape page (1920 x 1080 PNG and an A3 PDF) with: one large hero image, 6 to 8 supporting images (generated in a consistent style, using my attached photos where they fit), a palette of 5 colours with hex codes, 2 or 3 texture or material swatches, 2 font pairings (free Google Fonts), and 3 keywords. Add a short note explaining the direction, and make a second, slightly different version so I can compare.
What to change
- [PROJECT]: E.g. "rebrand for Hearth & Field, an organic candle shop", "my living room makeover", "a beach engagement shoot".
- [MOOD WORDS]: Three to five words, e.g. "warm, calm, handmade, Scandinavian, natural light".
- [WHAT TO AVOID]: E.g. "anything glossy or neon", "too rustic", "cold greys".
- [REFERENCES]: Attach photos, screenshots or Pinterest saves and write "attached", or name brands, films or places, e.g. "like a Danish summer house".
Example result
- Mood board for Hearth & Field
- Organic candle shop rebrand · warm, calm, handmade, natural light · avoid glossy, neon, cold greys
- Version A: Morning kitchen
- Hero image: a hand-poured candle on a worn oak table, early sun through linen curtains, soft shadows.
- Supporting images
- • Dried wheat and lavender in a stoneware jug
- • Close-up of beeswax being poured from a copper jug
- • Kraft paper packaging tied with cotton string
- • Hands pressing a wax seal
- • A linen apron hanging on a hook
- • A field at golden hour, slightly out of focus
- Palette
- • Oat #E8DCC8 · Clay #B5835A · Sage #8A9A7B · Charcoal #3A3632 · Candle glow #F2B66D
- Textures: raw linen, unglazed ceramic, recycled kraft paper
- Fonts: Fraunces (headings) with Work Sans (body); or Cormorant Garamond with Inter
- Keywords: slow · honest · golden
- Version B: Evening field
- Same palette shifted darker: the hero is a candle on a windowsill at dusk with a field outside. More charcoal and clay, fewer whites. Feels cosier and more premium.
- Direction note
- Version A suits an everyday, friendly brand and bright product photos. Version B suits a higher price point and gift sets. Either way: matte surfaces, natural fibres, warm light from one side, nothing shiny.
- Files delivered
- • hearth_field_moodboard_a.png and _b.png: 1920 x 1080
- • hearth_field_moodboards.pdf: both on A3 landscape pages
- • palette.txt: hex and RGB values to paste into design tools
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and fill in your project, mood words, what to avoid and your references.
- Paste it into todo.is with any reference photos attached, or send them to your agent on WhatsApp.
- Compare the two boards and share the PDF with your team, client or designer.
- Ask for changes ("warmer palette", "replace the field photo"), then use the board to brief your logo, website or shoot.
Tips for a better result
- Say what you don't want. "Not rustic" or "no beige" narrows the direction faster than more positive words.
- Attach your own photos of the room, product or location. A board built around reality is easier to act on.
- Ask for two versions that differ on one thing (lighter vs darker, modern vs vintage) to make the choice easy.
- Once you choose, ask your agent to save the palette and fonts as your brand style so future designs match.
mood board maker: FAQ
- What should a mood board include? Usually a hero image, several supporting images, a colour palette, textures or materials, typography ideas and a few keywords that describe the feeling.
- How many images should a mood board have? Around 6 to 12. Fewer images with a clear direction work better than a crowded collage.
- Can I make an interior design mood board from my room photo? Yes. Attach the photo and your agent builds the board around your room, with furniture, materials and colours that fit. It can also show a redesigned version of the room.
- Can I use the images commercially? The board is for planning. For final branding or ads, use your own photos, licensed stock, or images you create and check against the image model's terms.
