QR code generator for links, Wi-Fi and contact cards, tested before you print
A QR code that doesn't scan is worse than none, and many free generators quietly route your link through their own redirect. This prompt has your todo.is agent build the code with a Python script straight from your link or details, style it in your colours, test that it scans, and give you files ready for print and screens.
The prompt
- Create a QR code for [QR CONTENT]. Make it with a Python QR library so it encodes my content directly, with no redirect or tracking link. Error correction: high, so a small logo fits. Colours: [COLOURS] (dark code on a light background, strong contrast). Logo: [LOGO]. Add a short label under it: [LABEL TEXT]. Decode the final image with a QR reader in your workspace to prove it scans, and tell me the result. Deliver a 2000 x 2000 PNG, an SVG, and a print-ready PDF card at [PRINT SIZE] with a quiet zone of 4 modules around the code.
What to change
- [QR CONTENT]: A URL ("https://olea.example/menu"), Wi-Fi ("network OleaGuest, password sunset24, WPA2"), a contact card (name, phone, email), an email address or plain text.
- [COLOURS]: E.g. "navy #1F2A44 on white", or "black on white" for the most reliable scanning.
- [LOGO]: Attach a small logo and write "logo attached, in the centre", or "no logo".
- [LABEL TEXT]: A call to action, e.g. "Scan for our menu", "Free Wi-Fi", "Save my contact".
- [PRINT SIZE]: E.g. "A6 table tent", "5 x 5 cm sticker", "business card back", or "screen only".
Example result
- QR code for Olea Kitchen's menu
- Content: https://olea.example/menu · navy #1F2A44 on white · logo in the centre · label "Scan for our menu"
- How it was made
- • Generated with a Python QR library, encoding the URL directly: no short link, no third-party redirect, so it keeps working as long as your page does
- • Error correction level H (about 30% recovery), so the centre logo can cover part of the code safely
- • Logo resized to 18% of the code width, on a white rounded square so it doesn't touch the modules
- • Rounded modules, square position markers (the three big corner squares) kept solid for reliable scanning
- Scan test
- • Decoded the final PNG in the workspace: result https://olea.example/menu (matches)
- • Also decoded a version shrunk to 2 cm: still reads
- • Tip: test with your own phone camera too, in the lighting where it will be used
- Files delivered
- • olea_menu_qr.png: 2000 x 2000 px, for print and design apps
- • olea_menu_qr.svg: scalable, for signs and large prints
- • olea_menu_table_tent_a6.pdf: A6 card with the logo, "Scan for our menu" and the code at 6 cm wide, 4-module white border
- Other things you can encode
- • Wi-Fi: guests join with one scan (network, password, security type)
- • Contact card (vCard): name, phone, email, company saved straight to the phone
- • Email or SMS: opens a message with your address and a subject filled in
- • Plain text or a location link
- Sizing rule of thumb
- Make the code at least 2 x 2 cm, and about one tenth of the scanning distance: a code on a poster read from 2 m should be around 20 cm wide.
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and fill in what the code should open, colours, logo, label and print size.
- Paste it on the Today screen in todo.is or send it to your agent, with your logo attached.
- Read the scan test result, then download the PNG, SVG and print PDF.
- Test it with your own phone, then print. Ask for more codes (Wi-Fi, contact card) in the same style anytime.
Tips for a better result
- Use a link to a page you control. If the menu or offer changes, update the page and the printed code keeps working.
- Keep strong contrast: dark code, light background. Inverted or pastel codes fail on many phones.
- Don't shrink the white border (quiet zone). Cropping it is a common reason printed codes won't scan.
- Add a short label saying what happens when people scan. More people scan when they know what they will get.
QR code generator: FAQ
- Do QR codes expire? A static QR code that encodes your link directly never expires. Codes from some free generators point to their redirect service and can stop working if that service ends or asks for payment.
- Can I put a logo in a QR code? Yes, with high error correction and a logo covering no more than about 20% to 25% of the code. Always test the final file.
- What size should a printed QR code be? At least 2 x 2 cm for close scanning, larger for distance. Roughly one tenth of the scanning distance is a good guide.
- Can I track how many people scan it? A static code can't count scans by itself. Point it to a link with tracking parameters (such as UTM tags) on your own website and check your analytics.
