Sentence rewriter for the one line you keep rewriting
Some sentences just will not come out right: a clumsy opening line, a headline, a bio, a key sentence in a cover letter. This prompt has your todo.is agent rewrite one sentence in eight different ways, each with a clear purpose, and tell you which one it would pick and why.
The prompt
- Rewrite this sentence in 8 different ways: "[YOUR SENTENCE]". Context: it is [WHERE IT GOES]. Give me these versions, labeled: shorter, simpler, more active (no passive voice), more specific, more formal, more casual, stronger opening word, and one creative version. Keep the meaning and any facts or numbers the same. Each version must be one sentence and read naturally out loud. Avoid filler like "in order to", "very" and "really", and avoid clichés. Then tell me which version you would choose for this context and why, in 2 lines. My main problem with it is [WHAT FEELS WRONG].
What to change
- [YOUR SENTENCE]: The one sentence you want rewritten. For several, paste them one per line.
- [WHERE IT GOES]: e.g. "the first line of my cover letter", "a website headline", "a LinkedIn bio", "my thesis statement".
- [WHAT FEELS WRONG]: e.g. "too long", "sounds weak", "too stiff", "it repeats the word results". Write "not sure" if you do not know.
Example result
- Your sentence
- "I am writing in order to express my interest in the position of marketing coordinator that was advertised on your website."
- Context: first line of a cover letter. Problem: sounds generic.
- 8 rewrites
- • Shorter: I would like to apply for your marketing coordinator role.
- • Simpler: I want to apply for the marketing coordinator job on your website.
- • More active: Your marketing coordinator opening caught my attention right away.
- • More specific: I have run email campaigns for three local businesses, and I would love to bring that experience to your marketing coordinator role.
- • More formal: Please accept this letter as my application for the position of Marketing Coordinator.
- • More casual: When I saw you were hiring a marketing coordinator, I knew I had to apply.
- • Stronger opening word: Three years of running small-business campaigns have prepared me for your marketing coordinator role.
- • Creative: Last spring I grew a bakery's newsletter from 200 to 1,400 readers, and I'd like to do the same for you as your marketing coordinator.
- My pick
- More specific. Hiring managers read hundreds of letters that open with "I am writing to express my interest". Starting with real experience shows why you fit in the first line.
- What was wrong with the original
- • "I am writing in order to express my interest" uses 9 words to say "I want to apply"
- • "that was advertised on your website" is a fact the reader already knows
- • Nothing in it is about you
- Quick rules for better sentences
- • Put the most important word near the start or the end
- • Prefer verbs over nouns: "decide" instead of "make a decision"
- • One idea per sentence
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt, paste your sentence in the quotes and say where it will be used.
- Send it to your agent on the Today screen in todo.is, or on WhatsApp or Telegram while you are writing.
- Pick a version or ask for more like it, e.g. "5 more like the specific one".
- Paste several sentences at once if you want a whole paragraph tightened line by line.
Tips for a better result
- Context changes the best answer. A headline, a thesis statement and a text to a friend need very different rewrites.
- If two versions are close, read them out loud. The one you can say in one breath usually wins.
- For a cover letter or bio, give your agent one real fact or number. The "more specific" version is only as good as what you give it.
- Do not add facts that are not true. If a rewrite suggests a number you do not have, replace it with your real one.
sentence rewriter: FAQ
- How do I make a sentence shorter without losing meaning? Cut filler phrases ("in order to", "the fact that"), remove words the reader already knows, and turn nouns back into verbs. Then check the facts are still there.
- What is passive voice and should I avoid it? Passive voice puts the action before the doer, as in "the report was written by Ana". It is fine sometimes, but active voice ("Ana wrote the report") is usually clearer and shorter.
- Can it rewrite a whole paragraph? Yes. Paste one sentence per line and it rewrites each, or ask it to rewrite the paragraph as a whole for flow.
- Is a sentence rewriter the same as a paraphrasing tool? They are close. A sentence rewriter focuses on one line and gives many options; a paraphrasing tool restates a whole passage in new words.
