Amazon product research that reads the reviews for you
Choosing an Amazon product means reading hundreds of listings and complaints. This prompt has your agent look at the top sellers for your product ideas, pull out what buyers complain about, estimate fees and margins, and tell you where a better version could win.
The prompt
- Do Amazon product research on [AMAZON MARKETPLACE] for these product ideas: [PRODUCT IDEAS]. For each idea, look at the top 10 listings on page one and note: price, number of reviews, rating, best sellers rank where shown, brand count, and listing quality. Read the 1-3 star reviews of the top 5 and list the most common complaints. Estimate the FBA fees using Amazon's public fee pages and the margin at a landed cost of [LANDED COST PER UNIT]. Tell me which idea has demand but beatable competition (for example many listings under 200 reviews), and what improvements a new product should have. Deliver an Excel file with one tab per idea plus a summary tab, with links to every listing.
What to change
- [AMAZON MARKETPLACE]: Which Amazon site, e.g. "amazon.com", "amazon.co.uk" or "amazon.de".
- [PRODUCT IDEAS]: 2-5 ideas, e.g. "silicone stretch lids, bamboo drawer dividers, garlic press".
- [LANDED COST PER UNIT]: Your expected cost including shipping to Amazon, e.g. "$4.50". Write "estimate it" if unknown.
Example result
- Summary: 3 ideas on amazon.com
- Bamboo drawer dividers - best opening
- • Page one: 7 of 10 listings have under 1,500 reviews; two big brands, the rest small sellers
- • Price band: $22-38 for a 4-pack
- • Top complaints (from 1-3 star reviews): springs too weak so dividers slip, rough edges, don't fit shallow drawers
- • Improvement idea: stronger spring, sanded edges, a version for drawers under 2.5 inches deep
- • Illustrative margin: landed cost $7.20, price $29.99, estimated FBA and referral fees about $9.50, around $13 before ads
- Silicone stretch lids - crowded
- • Page one dominated by listings with 20,000+ reviews and prices under $15
- • Complaints: tear after a few months, smell after dishwasher
- • Verdict: hard to win on price; only worth it with a clear quality difference
- Garlic press - mixed
- • Strong brands with loyal reviews, but room in the premium stainless segment
- • Complaints: hard to clean, handle bends
- • Verdict: possible with a self-cleaning design and great photos
- What to check next for the drawer dividers
- • Ask 3 suppliers for samples with a stronger spring
- • Check for existing design patents before finalizing the design
- • Plan main images showing the divider in a real drawer, plus an infographic with sizes
- • Look at keyword search terms in the top titles: "adjustable", "expandable", "kitchen", "dresser"
- Notes
- • Fees come from Amazon's public fee pages for a standard-size item and change over time
- • Review counts and ranks were read on the day of research; all margins are illustrative
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt, set your Amazon marketplace, list your ideas and a landed cost if you know it.
- Paste it into todo.is or send it to your agent on Telegram, Slack or email.
- Your agent reads listings and reviews in a browser and sends an Excel workbook with links.
- Ask "turn the top complaints into a product spec" or "write the listing for idea 1" next.
Tips for a better result
- Low-star reviews of the top sellers are your product brief. Each repeated complaint is a feature you can add.
- Avoid ideas where page one is all 10,000+ review listings unless you have a real difference and a big launch budget.
- Check size and weight early. Moving from standard to oversize changes FBA fees a lot.
- Ask your agent for a monthly recheck of the same ideas to see if prices or new sellers are moving in.
Amazon product research: FAQ
- What is a good number of reviews for competitors on Amazon? Many sellers look for page-one listings where several competitors have under a few hundred to 1,500 reviews. That suggests buyers are still open to new options.
- How do I estimate Amazon FBA fees? Amazon publishes FBA fulfillment and referral fee tables, and offers a revenue calculator in Seller Central. Fees depend on size tier, weight and category, so check them for your exact product.
- Can the agent see exact Amazon sales numbers? No. Amazon doesn't publish sales figures. Your agent uses public signals like best sellers rank, review count and price, so treat any sales estimate as a rough guide.
- Is this the same as writing an Amazon listing? No. This page is about choosing a product. Once you've picked one, use the Amazon listing writer prompt to write the title, bullets and description.
