App Store optimization: title, keywords and screenshots that convert
Your app is live but barely shows up when people search the App Store or Google Play. This prompt has your todo.is agent look at the top apps for your main searches, study their names, subtitles, screenshots and reviews, and write metadata that fits every character limit, plus screenshot captions and a short list of keywords to test.
The prompt
- Do App Store optimization for my app [APP NAME] ([STORE LINK]). It helps [WHAT IT DOES AND FOR WHOM]. Search the Apple App Store and Google Play in their web versions for [MAIN SEARCH TERMS] and study the top 10 apps: names, subtitles or short descriptions, screenshot captions, ratings and what reviewers praise or complain about. Then write: iOS app name (30 characters), subtitle (30), keyword field (100 characters, comma-separated, no spaces, no words already in the name), Google Play title (30) and short description (80), a long description with the main keywords in natural sentences, and captions for 6 screenshots. Give 2 versions of the name and subtitle to A/B test. Deliver as a Word document with character counts.
What to change
- [APP NAME]: Your app's current name, e.g. "Sprout".
- [STORE LINK]: Your App Store or Google Play link, or "not launched yet".
- [WHAT IT DOES AND FOR WHOM]: One sentence, e.g. "track baby feeding, sleep and diapers for new parents".
- [MAIN SEARCH TERMS]: 3 to 6 searches you want to appear for, e.g. "baby tracker, feeding log, newborn sleep".
Example result
- What the top apps do
- • 8 of the top 10 put "baby tracker" in the app name, not just the subtitle.
- • Screenshots lead with one big benefit per slide ("Log a feed in 1 tap"), not feature lists.
- • Common complaints in reviews: paywalls on basic logging, slow sync between parents, cluttered screens. Your free partner sync is a real selling point.
- iOS
- • App name (30): Sprout: Baby Tracker & Feeding
- • Subtitle (30): Newborn sleep, diaper, pumping
- • Keyword field (98): breastfeeding,nursing,bottle,timer,nap,schedule,growth,chart,infant,parent,twins,milestone,journal
- Google Play
- • Title (30): Sprout: Baby Tracker & Feeding
- • Short description (68): Log feeds, sleep and diapers in one tap. Free sync for both parents.
- A/B test versions
- • A: Sprout: Baby Tracker & Feeding / Newborn sleep, diaper, pumping
- • B: Sprout: Baby Feeding & Sleep / Simple tracker for new parents
- Screenshot captions
- • 1. Log a feed in one tap
- • 2. See today's sleep at a glance
- • 3. Both parents, always in sync
- • 4. Pumping and bottle log built in
- • 5. Growth charts to share with your doctor
- • 6. Dark mode for 3 a.m. feeds
- Long description opening
- Sprout is the simple baby tracker for tired parents. Log breastfeeding, bottles, sleep and diapers in one tap, and share everything with your partner for free.
- Notes
- Apple does not index words twice, so the keyword field skips words in the name and subtitle. Change one thing at a time and watch impressions and conversion in App Store Connect for 2 to 4 weeks.
How to do it with todo.is
- Fill in your app name, store link, what it does and the searches you care about.
- Paste the prompt into todo.is or send it to your agent on WhatsApp or Discord.
- Your agent studies competitor listings and reviews, then writes every field with character counts.
- Ask for localized versions next, e.g. "now do Spanish and German metadata".
Tips for a better result
- The iOS keyword field is hidden from users. Use singulars, skip spaces after commas and never repeat words from the name.
- Your first two screenshots do most of the selling. Put the biggest benefit there.
- Mine competitor reviews for complaints you solve, then say so in your screenshots.
- Localize metadata for your top countries. Each locale gives you more keyword space.
App Store optimization: FAQ
- What is App Store optimization? ASO is improving your app's store listing so it ranks for relevant searches and more viewers install it. It covers the name, subtitle, keywords, description, screenshots, ratings and reviews.
- How long does ASO take to show results? Metadata changes go live with an app update or listing change, and rankings usually settle within a few weeks. Test one change at a time so you know what worked.
- Does the long description affect App Store rankings? On iOS the long description is not used for search ranking, but it helps people decide. On Google Play the full description is indexed, so use keywords naturally.
- Can the agent update my App Store listing? No. It writes the text and captions; you paste them into App Store Connect or the Play Console yourself.
