Competitor keyword research: find the topics they win and you miss
Your competitor seems to show up for every search your customers make. This prompt has your todo.is agent read their site structure and blog, test their likely keywords on Google, and compare with your pages. You get a gap list of topics worth writing about, sorted by how realistic they are for you.
The prompt
- Do competitor keyword research for [YOUR SITE] against [COMPETITOR SITES]. Read each competitor's sitemap, main menu, category pages and blog, and list the topics and keywords each page targets. Check a sample of those keywords on Google in [COUNTRY] to see who ranks. Then compare with my site and sort keywords into: they rank and I have no page (gap), we both have a page but they rank higher (weak), and I rank better (strength). If I attach [KEYWORD EXPORT], use its search volumes; otherwise mark volume as a rough estimate. Deliver an Excel file with all keywords, the competitor URL, my matching URL, intent and a priority score, plus a one-page summary of the 15 best opportunities and what page to create for each.
What to change
- [YOUR SITE]: Your domain, e.g. "tidyhome.io".
- [COMPETITOR SITES]: 2 to 4 competitors who rank for your topics, e.g. "neatnest.com, homeorg.co". They may differ from your business competitors.
- [COUNTRY]: Where your audience searches, e.g. "United States".
- [KEYWORD EXPORT]: Optional: a keyword export from your SEO tool or Search Console Queries CSV. Leave "none" if you don't have one.
Example result
- Competitor keyword research: tidyhome.io
- Compared with neatnest.com and homeorg.co. Searches checked on Google US. Volumes from your attached Queries export where available; others marked as estimates.
- The big picture
- • Competitors win with room-by-room guides ("how to organize a small pantry") and product round-ups ("best drawer dividers").
- • You rank better on decluttering methods and printable checklists.
- • Neither competitor covers moving and downsizing well. That is open ground.
- Top opportunities
- • how to organize a small pantry (gap): neatnest ranks #2 with a 1,800-word guide. Create a guide with photos and a printable label sheet.
- • closet organization ideas for small closets (gap): homeorg ranks #4. Write a guide with 12 ideas and a budget column.
- • garage organization on a budget (weak): your post ranks #18 vs neatnest #5. Refresh it with a shopping list and before/after photos.
- • decluttering checklist printable (strength): you are #3. Add a PDF version and FAQ to push for the top spot.
- • downsizing checklist for seniors (gap, low competition): mostly forums rank. A strong guide could reach page 1.
- Pages to create first
- • 1. Small pantry organization guide
- • 2. Downsizing checklist for seniors
- • 3. Small closet ideas
- How the score works
- Priority = relevance to what you sell + realistic chance (who ranks now) + estimated demand. Treat estimates as rough; check volumes in your SEO tool before big investments.
How to do it with todo.is
- Pick 2 to 4 competitors that rank on Google for your topics. Copy the prompt and replace the brackets.
- Attach a keyword or Search Console export if you have one, then paste the to-do into todo.is or send it on Telegram.
- Your agent reads their sites, checks results live and builds the gap spreadsheet with a summary.
- Ask for the next step: "write a content brief for the top 3 gaps" or "repeat this every quarter".
Tips for a better result
- Use search competitors, not just business rivals. A big publisher may be the one taking your clicks.
- Start with gaps that match what you sell. Traffic that never buys looks good in reports and nowhere else.
- Weak spots are often faster wins than gaps, because you already have a page to improve.
- Group similar keywords into one page. Five near-identical posts compete with each other.
competitor keyword research: FAQ
- How do I find what keywords my competitors rank for? Read their sitemap, menus and blog to see which topics they target, then check those searches on Google. SEO tools add estimated volumes, and you can attach their export to this prompt.
- Are the search volumes exact? No. todo.is has no keyword volume database, so volumes come from your attached export or are marked as rough estimates based on what the results look like.
- How many competitors should I compare? Two to four is a good range. More than that adds noise and makes the gap list harder to act on.
