Content gap analysis against your real competitors
Your competitors keep showing up for searches you never wrote about. A content gap analysis finds those topics, but doing it by hand means reading three sites page by page. With this prompt, your todo.is agent compares their content with yours, lists the gaps and ranks which ones are worth writing first.
The prompt
- Do a content gap analysis for my site [YOUR WEBSITE] against these competitors: [COMPETITOR WEBSITES]. We sell [WHAT YOU SELL] to [AUDIENCE]. Read the blog, guides and resource pages on each site and list the topics each one covers. Search Google for the main topics in my niche and note which of these sites show up. Find: topics the competitors cover and I do not, topics we all cover where theirs is clearly better (more depth, tools, examples, more recent), and questions no one answers well. For each gap give a suggested page title, search intent, which competitor covers it, and a priority score based on fit with my product and how hard it looks. Return an Excel file sorted by priority and a 1-page summary in Word.
What to change
- [YOUR WEBSITE]: Your site link.
- [COMPETITOR WEBSITES]: 2 to 4 sites you compete with in search, not just in sales, e.g. "rivalone.com, rivaltwo.io".
- [WHAT YOU SELL]: e.g. "project management software", "organic dog food".
- [AUDIENCE]: e.g. "small construction firms", "new dog owners".
Example result
- Content gap analysis · pawpantry.com
- Compared with: barkbowl.com, kibblewise.com, goodpup.co. Audience: new dog owners.
- Gaps: they cover it, you do not
- • "How much should I feed my puppy" · Informational · Covered by all 3, two with a feeding calculator · Priority: high. Leads straight to your puppy food.
- • "Switching dog food schedule" · Informational · barkbowl.com has a 7-day chart · High.
- • "Dog food allergy symptoms" · Informational · kibblewise.com, written with a vet reviewer · Medium. Needs an expert reviewer.
- • "Raw vs kibble" · Commercial · goodpup.co · Medium.
- Weak spots: you cover it, theirs is better
- • Puppy feeding guide: yours is 400 words; barkbowl.com has 2,000 words, a chart and a calculator.
- • Senior dog nutrition: yours dates from 2022 and has no table of foods by age.
- Questions no one answers well
- • "How much food for a puppy that is a mixed breed?" Most guides assume a known breed.
- • "Can I mix two brands of dog food?" Answers are short and vague.
- Top 5 to write first
- • Puppy feeding calculator page
- • 7-day food switching schedule (printable)
- • Mixed-breed puppy feeding guide
- • Update the senior dog nutrition guide
- • "Can I mix dog food brands?" guide
- How priority was scored
- • Fit: how close the topic is to what you sell.
- • Difficulty: who ranks now; big brands and vet sites are harder.
- • Effort: a short guide is quick; a calculator needs more work.
- For health topics, have a vet review the content before publishing.
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and list your site and 2 to 4 search competitors.
- Paste it into todo.is, or send it to your agent on Telegram.
- Your agent reads all the sites, searches your niche, and sends an Excel gap list plus a summary.
- Reply "make a content brief for gap 1" to turn the top gap into an article plan.
Tips for a better result
- Pick search competitors, the sites that rank for your topics, not only companies you lose deals to.
- Look for format gaps, not only topic gaps. A calculator or template can beat a longer article.
- Skip gaps that do not fit your product. Traffic that never converts is not worth the effort.
- Rerun it every quarter as a recurring to-do to catch new topics competitors publish.
content gap analysis: FAQ
- What is a content gap analysis? It compares your content with competitors and with what people search, to find topics you are missing or covering poorly. The result is a list of pages to create or improve.
- How many competitors should I compare? Two to four is usually enough. More than that adds noise without many new ideas.
- Do I need an SEO tool for this? Not to start. Reading competitor content and the search results shows most gaps. Keyword tools add search volume estimates if you have one.
