Competitor price monitoring with a weekly Excel report
If you sell online, you probably check rival stores by hand when you remember, and miss the week they started a sale. This prompt has your todo.is agent check the same competitor product pages on a schedule, match them to your own products and send a clear Excel report with price changes, promotions and out-of-stock items.
The prompt
- Monitor competitor prices for my store. My products and prices are in [YOUR PRODUCT LIST]. The competitors are [COMPETITOR STORES]. Every [DAY AND TIME], open each competitor’s matching product page and record the price, any sale or coupon, shipping cost and stock status. Match products by [HOW TO MATCH PRODUCTS]. Send me an Excel file with one row per product: my price, each competitor’s price, the gap in % and what changed since last week. At the top, write 3 to 5 bullets on the most important moves. If a competitor undercuts me by more than [ALERT THRESHOLD] on a product, message me on Slack right away. Only use public pages.
What to change
- [YOUR PRODUCT LIST]: Attach a spreadsheet with product names, SKUs and your prices, or paste the list.
- [COMPETITOR STORES]: Store websites, e.g. "trailgear.example, peakoutfit.example, and Amazon listings for the same items".
- [DAY AND TIME]: e.g. "Monday at 7:00". Daily works too in busy seasons.
- [HOW TO MATCH PRODUCTS]: e.g. "same brand and model number" or "closest equivalent size and material". Give links if you have them.
- [ALERT THRESHOLD]: e.g. "10%" or "$5".
Example result
- Competitor price report · week 41
- Your store: Ridge & Pine Outdoor · 24 products · 3 competitors checked Monday 07:00
- What matters this week
- • Peak Outfit started a 15% off site-wide sale (banner says it ends Sunday). 9 of your products are affected.
- • Trail Gear cut the Alto 2 tent to $279 (was $319). You sell it at $315, a 13% gap.
- • Two competitors are out of stock on the Nimbus 20 sleeping bag. You have stock: a chance to hold your price.
- • Shipping: Trail Gear raised free-shipping minimum from $50 to $75.
- Biggest gaps (competitor lower than you)
- • Alto 2 tent: you $315 · Trail Gear $279 (-11%) · Peak Outfit $297 with sale
- • Summit 30L pack: you $129 · Peak Outfit $110 with sale (-15%)
- • Glide trekking poles: you $89 · Amazon listing $79 (-11%), third-party seller
- Where you are cheapest
- • Nimbus 20 sleeping bag, Ember stove, Flux headlamp
- Changes since last week
- • 6 price drops, 2 price increases, 3 new promotions, 2 items out of stock
- Ideas to consider
- • Match only where the gap is permanent, not during a short sale.
- • Highlight free shipping on orders between $50 and $75 now that Trail Gear raised its minimum.
- • Bundle the Alto 2 tent with stakes instead of cutting the price.
- The full table (price, sale, shipping, stock, % gap, change) is in Competitor_Prices_Week41.xlsx. All figures are from public product pages on the check date.
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt, attach your product list and add the competitor stores.
- Paste it on the Today screen in todo.is, or send it to your agent on Slack.
- Your agent checks the pages on your schedule and sends the Excel report, plus an instant alert for big undercuts.
- Ask follow-ups like "add a column for review count" or "check daily during November".
Tips for a better result
- Start with your top 20 to 50 products. A focused report you read beats a huge one you ignore.
- Match on model number or SKU whenever possible. "Similar" products make the % gap misleading.
- Track shipping and promotions, not just the list price. Shoppers compare the total.
- Respect each site’s terms and only check public pages. A weekly check is light and usually enough.
competitor price monitoring: FAQ
- What is competitor price monitoring? It means checking rival stores’ prices for the same or similar products on a schedule, so you can see undercuts, sales and stock gaps and set your own prices with facts.
- Is it legal to monitor competitor prices? Looking at public prices is common practice. Respect each site’s terms of use, do not overload sites, and do not use the data to coordinate prices with competitors.
- Can it change my prices automatically? No. Your agent reports and suggests. You decide and update prices in your store yourself.
- Can it monitor Amazon, eBay or Etsy sellers? Yes, if the listings are public. Give your agent the listing links or tell it which sellers to look for.
