Content audit that tells you what to keep, update, merge or cut
After a few years, a blog fills up with outdated posts, near-duplicates and pages nobody visits. A content audit sorts it out, but reading 200 posts is a week of work. This prompt has your todo.is agent read every page, combine it with your traffic export and give each one a clear action.
The prompt
- Do a content audit of [BLOG OR SITEMAP URL]. I attached [TRAFFIC EXPORT] with clicks and impressions per page. Read every post and record: title, URL, publish or update date if shown, word count, main topic, target keyword guess, and whether facts, years, products or links look outdated. Find posts that cover the same topic and could be merged. Then give each page one action: keep, update, merge (with which page), redirect, or remove, with a one-line reason. Use the traffic data to prioritize: pages with many impressions but few clicks or old facts come first. My business goal is [GOAL]. Return an Excel file with an audit tab, a summary tab with counts per action, and a top 15 to work on first. Check at most [PAGE LIMIT] pages.
What to change
- [BLOG OR SITEMAP URL]: e.g. "mysite.com/blog" or "mysite.com/sitemap.xml".
- [TRAFFIC EXPORT]: A CSV from Google Search Console or your analytics tool. Or write "no data" and your agent audits by content only.
- [GOAL]: e.g. "more demo requests", "more newsletter sign-ups", "recover lost traffic".
- [PAGE LIMIT]: e.g. "200". Large sites can be done in batches.
Example result
- Content audit · tidyhome.blog
- 148 posts audited with 12 months of Search Console data. Goal: more newsletter sign-ups.
- Summary
- • Keep: 61 posts. Accurate and getting clicks.
- • Update: 47 posts. Outdated facts or years, weak intros, broken links.
- • Merge: 22 posts in 9 groups covering the same topic.
- • Remove or redirect: 18 posts. Thin, off-topic or old announcements with no traffic.
- Top 5 to work on first
- • /blog/declutter-checklist · Update. High impressions, low click rate. Title says 2021. Add a printable checklist with a newsletter sign-up.
- • /blog/konmari-method + /blog/konmari-tips + /blog/marie-kondo-guide · Merge into one guide. All three compete for the same searches.
- • /blog/best-storage-bins · Update. 4 of 9 products are no longer sold.
- • /blog/spring-cleaning · Keep, but refresh before March, when interest usually rises.
- • /blog/we-are-on-instagram · Remove and redirect to the homepage. No clicks, no links.
- Merge groups (examples)
- • Konmari: 3 posts into /blog/konmari-method
- • Closet organizing: 2 posts into /blog/organize-a-small-closet
- • Cleaning schedules: 3 posts into /blog/weekly-cleaning-schedule
- Common problems found
- • 31 posts mention a past year in the title or first paragraph.
- • 57 broken outbound links across 40 posts.
- • 19 posts have no clear call to action for the newsletter.
- How to handle each action
- • Update: keep the URL, refresh the content and the date.
- • Merge: move the best parts into one page, then 301-redirect the others to it.
- • Remove: redirect if the page has links or traffic; otherwise let it return 410 or 404.
How to do it with todo.is
- Export your page data from Search Console as CSV, if you have it.
- Copy the prompt, fill in the [brackets] and attach the export in todo.is or on WhatsApp.
- Your agent reads every post and returns an Excel audit with an action for each page.
- Start with the top 15, and ask your agent to rewrite or merge posts one by one.
Tips for a better result
- Audit with real traffic data when you can. A post that looks weak might still bring steady clicks.
- Merging overlapping posts often helps more than writing new ones, because they stop competing.
- Always redirect a removed page that has backlinks, so you keep their value.
- Repeat the audit once or twice a year. Ask your agent to schedule it as a recurring to-do.
content audit: FAQ
- What is a content audit? It is a review of every page on a site to decide what to keep, improve, combine or remove. The goal is a smaller set of better, up-to-date pages.
- How often should I do a content audit? Once a year suits most sites. Fast-changing topics or large sites may need one every six months.
- Should I delete old blog posts? Delete only posts with no traffic, no links and no value to readers. If a post has links or visits, update it or redirect it to a related page instead.
- Does todo.is need access to my analytics? No. You attach an export file, such as a CSV from Search Console. Your agent reads the file and your public pages.
