An investor update template you can send every month
Founders who send short, regular investor updates get faster help and easier follow-on rounds. Most stop after month two because pulling the numbers together takes an evening. This prompt has your agent assemble the update from your metrics and notes, in a format investors can read in two minutes, and can remind you on the same day every month.
The prompt
- Write our [MONTH] investor update for [COMPANY NAME]. Use the attached metrics [METRICS FILE] and my notes: [NOTES]. Format: subject line "Company - Month update", a 2-line TL;DR, then KPIs table (this month, last month, change), highlights, lowlights (be honest), cash in bank, monthly burn and runway in months, hiring, and 2 or 3 specific asks with names if possible. Keep it under 400 words, plain text that pastes well into email. Compare with last month's update if I attached it. Save it as a Gmail draft to [INVESTOR EMAIL LIST]. Then remind me on the [DAY OF MONTH] of every month to send my numbers for the next update.
What to change
- [MONTH]: The month covered, e.g. "September 2026".
- [COMPANY NAME]: Your startup name, e.g. "Fieldnote".
- [METRICS FILE]: Attach an Excel or CSV export (MRR, customers, churn, cash), or paste the numbers.
- [NOTES]: Wins, problems and news in a few lines, e.g. "signed Acme, lost 2 pilots, hired a designer".
- [INVESTOR EMAIL LIST]: Email addresses or "my investors label in Gmail". Google must be connected for drafts.
- [DAY OF MONTH]: When to remind you, e.g. "3rd" so numbers from last month are final.

How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and fill in the month, company, notes and when you want reminders.
- Paste it into todo.is and attach your metrics export. Connect Google if you want a Gmail draft.
- Your agent writes the update, checks burn and runway math, and saves the draft.
- Each month, reply to the reminder with your new numbers and get the next update in the same format.
Tips for a better result
- Send it on the same day every month, even when the month was bad. Consistency builds trust more than great numbers.
- Always include lowlights. Investors who hear about problems early are the ones who help fix them.
- Make asks specific: "intro to the COO of a 200-truck fleet" gets answered; "any intros welcome" does not.
- Keep the same KPIs every month so investors can see trends without re-learning the format.
investor update template: FAQ
- What should be in a monthly investor update? A short summary, key metrics compared with last month, highlights, lowlights, cash, burn and runway, team changes and a few specific asks.
- How often should startups send investor updates? Monthly is most common at early stages. Some later-stage companies switch to quarterly, but keep the same structure.
- How do I calculate runway? Divide cash in the bank by your average monthly net burn (money out minus money in). Use a 3-month average if burn moves around.
- Does my agent send the update to investors? It saves a Gmail draft and only sends after you approve. You can also copy it into your email tool.
