Keyword cannibalization checker with a fix for every clash
Your rankings for an important search keep flipping between two of your own pages, and neither gets to the top. That is keyword cannibalization. Attach your Search Console export and your todo.is agent finds every query where several of your URLs share impressions, reads those pages and recommends whether to merge, redirect, re-target or leave them alone.
The prompt
- Find keyword cannibalization on [YOUR DOMAIN]. Use the attached [SEARCH CONSOLE EXPORT] (query + page data for the last [DATE RANGE]). List every query with meaningful impressions where 2 or more of my URLs get impressions or clicks, and show for each URL its clicks, impressions and average position. Ignore brand queries and pages that clearly serve different intents. Then open the competing pages, compare their content and intent, and recommend one action per case: merge and 301 redirect, re-target one page to a different keyword, add internal links to the main page, or no action. Sort by potential clicks lost. Deliver an Excel file with the full list and a short Word summary of the 10 biggest cases with the exact steps.
What to change
- [YOUR DOMAIN]: The site to check, e.g. "fernandpot.com".
- [SEARCH CONSOLE EXPORT]: A CSV or Excel with query and page columns. The Search Console API, a Looker Studio export or a connector add-on all work. The standard UI export splits queries and pages, so add both files if that's what you have.
- [DATE RANGE]: e.g. "3 months". Long enough to smooth out daily swings.
Example result
- Keyword cannibalization: fernandpot.com
- Data: Search Console, last 3 months, 18,400 query-page rows. Brand queries removed.
- Summary
- • 23 queries where 2 or more of your pages split impressions
- • 6 cases worth fixing now, the rest are small or serve different intents
- Case 1: "how to repot a monstera"
- • /blog/repotting-monstera: avg position 9.4, 210 clicks
- • /blog/monstera-care-guide: avg position 12.1, 95 clicks
- • /blog/when-to-repot-houseplants: avg position 18.7, 12 clicks
- Google swaps between three pages. Fix: keep /blog/repotting-monstera as the main page, move the repotting section of the care guide into it, shorten that section in the care guide to two lines with a link, and add a link from the houseplants post.
- Case 2: "best soil for snake plant"
- • /products/cactus-mix and /blog/snake-plant-soil both rank around 11.
- Different intents (buy vs learn). Fix: no merge. Make the blog post link to the product with clear anchor text, and add a short "what to look for" box on the product page.
- Case 3: "fiddle leaf fig dropping leaves"
- • Two near-identical posts from 2022 and 2024.
- Fix: merge into the 2024 post, 301 redirect the 2022 URL, update the date.
- Not a problem
- • "pothos care" vs "pothos propagation": separate intents, both rank top 5.
- After fixing
- It can take a few weeks for Google to settle on one URL. Re-run this check in 6 weeks.
How to do it with todo.is
- Export query and page data from Search Console for the last few months.
- Copy the prompt, fill in the brackets, attach the export and send it to your agent in todo.is or on Telegram.
- Your agent finds competing pages, reads them and builds the Excel list and Word summary.
- Ask follow-ups like "write the merged version of case 1" or "draft the redirect list for my host".
Tips for a better result
- Two pages ranking for one query is not always bad. It is only a problem when neither ranks well or they swap places often.
- Merging is strongest when one page is clearly better. Move the best parts in, then 301 the weaker URL.
- Internal links and anchors tell Google which page is the main one. Point them all at your chosen page.
- Check for clashes before you publish: ask your agent "do I already have a page for this keyword?"
keyword cannibalization checker: FAQ
- What is keyword cannibalization? It is when several pages on the same site target the same search and intent, so Google is unsure which to rank. The result is often both pages ranking lower than one strong page would.
- How do I find keyword cannibalization in Search Console? In the Performance report, filter by one query and open the Pages tab. If several URLs get impressions, they may be competing. An export lets your agent check every query at once.
- Should I delete one of the pages? Usually merge and redirect instead of deleting, so you keep any links and traffic the weaker page had. Delete only thin pages with no links or visits.
