A meta description generator that reads every page first
Writing a meta description for 30 pages by hand is slow, and generic ones get ignored in search results. With this prompt, your todo.is agent opens each URL, works out what the page really offers, and writes a description under 155 characters with the main keyword and a reason to click.
The prompt
- Write meta descriptions for these pages: [PAGE URLS OR SITEMAP LINK]. My site sells [WHAT YOU OFFER] to [AUDIENCE]. Open each page, read the heading and main content, and find the keyword it is trying to rank for. For each page write one meta description between 130 and 155 characters: include the keyword near the start, say what the visitor gets, and end with a soft call to action. Use a [TONE] tone and never repeat the same description twice. Give me an Excel file with columns: URL, current description (if any), keyword, new description, character count. Flag any page with a missing or duplicate description. Send the file to [EMAIL OR CHAT].
What to change
- [PAGE URLS OR SITEMAP LINK]: A list of links, one per line, or your sitemap, e.g. "mysite.com/sitemap.xml". You can also attach a CSV of URLs.
- [WHAT YOU OFFER]: e.g. "handmade leather bags" or "tax software for freelancers".
- [AUDIENCE]: Who reads these pages, e.g. "small business owners in the UK".
- [TONE]: e.g. "friendly", "expert and calm", "playful".
- [EMAIL OR CHAT]: Where to deliver: your email, WhatsApp or Telegram.
Example result
- Meta descriptions · northfold.co
- Audience: commuters and students in the UK. Tone: friendly.
- Product pages
- • /bags/roll-top-backpack · keyword: waterproof roll top backpack
- New: "Waterproof roll top backpack in recycled canvas with a padded 16-inch laptop sleeve. Free UK returns for 60 days. See all six colours." (138 characters)
- • /bags/leather-tote · keyword: leather tote bag for work
- New: "A leather tote bag for work that fits a laptop, lunch and a water bottle. Full-grain leather, made in Porto. Find your colour today." (135 characters)
- Blog posts
- • /blog/how-to-clean-canvas-bag · keyword: how to clean a canvas bag
- New: "How to clean a canvas bag without ruining the shape: 5 simple steps, what soap to use, and the one thing never to put in the washer." (137 characters)
- Category pages
- • /laptop-bags · keyword: laptop bags UK
- New: "Laptop bags for 13 to 16-inch laptops, from slim sleeves to roll-top backpacks. Designed in London, delivered free across the UK." (130 characters)
- Issues found
- • 5 pages had no meta description, so Google was picking random text from the page.
- • /bags and /shop shared the same description. Both now have their own.
- • 2 descriptions were over 200 characters and would be cut off.
- Rules used
- • Keyword in the first 60 characters, because it gets bolded when it matches the search.
- • One clear benefit and one detail (material, size, returns) per description.
- • No keyword stuffing and no all-caps.
- Note: Google sometimes rewrites descriptions with text from your page. A clear, matching description makes that less likely.
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and fill in the [brackets] with your pages, offer and tone.
- Paste it into todo.is on the Today screen, or send it to your agent on WhatsApp or Telegram.
- Your agent visits each page and returns an Excel sheet with a new description and its character count.
- Paste the new descriptions into your CMS, or ask for changes like "make the blog ones shorter".
Tips for a better result
- Aim for roughly 130 to 155 characters. Longer ones get cut off on mobile, shorter ones waste space.
- Write for the click, not just the keyword: a concrete detail like "free returns" or "5 steps" stands out.
- Give each page its own description. Duplicates across many pages tell Google little about each one.
- Ask your agent to rerun it every month on new pages only, so new products never go live without one.
meta description generator: FAQ
- How long should a meta description be? There is no fixed limit, but Google usually shows around 150 to 160 characters on desktop and less on mobile. Keeping it near 130 to 155 characters is a safe range.
- Do meta descriptions affect rankings? Not directly. They affect how many people click your result, and a good click-through rate brings more visitors from the same ranking.
- Why does Google show a different description than mine? Google can rewrite the snippet to match the search better. This happens more when the description is vague, missing, or does not match the page content.
- Can todo.is update the descriptions on my site? Your agent writes them and gives you a spreadsheet. You paste them into your CMS or SEO plugin yourself.
