Teacher cover letter that shows what happens in your classroom
Principals read dozens of teacher letters that say "I am passionate about education." The ones that stand out describe a real lesson, a student result and how the teacher fits the school. This prompt has your todo.is agent read the posting and the school’s site, then write that letter for you.
The prompt
- Write a cover letter for a [GRADE LEVEL AND SUBJECT] teaching job at [SCHOOL AND DISTRICT]. Job posting: [JOB POSTING LINK]. My resume: [ATTACH OR PASTE YOUR RESUME]. My certification: [CERTIFICATION OR LICENSE]. One thing that worked in my classroom: [A LESSON, STRATEGY OR STUDENT RESULT]. Read the school website for its mission, programs or improvement goals and connect my experience to one of them. Mention classroom management, how I support different learners (ELL, IEP) and family communication. Friendly and professional, under 350 words, addressed to the principal by name if the website lists it. Word file plus plain text.
What to change
- [GRADE LEVEL AND SUBJECT]: e.g. "3rd grade", "high school chemistry" or "middle school ELA".
- [SCHOOL AND DISTRICT]: The school name and district, so your agent can find its website.
- [JOB POSTING LINK]: Link to the posting (district site, school site, job board), or paste the text.
- [ATTACH OR PASTE YOUR RESUME]: Your resume file, or student-teaching and work history.
- [CERTIFICATION OR LICENSE]: e.g. "Ohio Professional Educator License, grades 4–9 math" or "Certification expected June".
- [A LESSON, STRATEGY OR STUDENT RESULT]: e.g. "Reading groups that moved 70% of students up one level by spring".

- Dear Principal Alvarez,
- I read on the Maple Grove website that raising third-grade reading levels is your top goal this year. That is exactly the work I have focused on for four years, and I would love to join your team as a 3rd Grade Teacher.
- At Riverside Elementary I teach a class of 26 students, including five English language learners and three students with IEPs. I run small reading groups based on weekly running records, so each group gets text at the right level. Last year 70% of my students moved up at least one reading level by spring, and two ELL students reached grade level for the first time.
- My classroom runs on clear routines we build together in the first two weeks, which leaves more time for teaching and fewer interruptions. I work closely with our intervention specialist and special education team, and I send families a short weekly update with photos and one thing they can practice at home. Attendance at parent conferences in my class reached 95% last year.
- I hold an Ohio Professional Educator License for grades PK–5 and a reading endorsement. I would be happy to coach after-school reading club or help with family literacy nights.
- Thank you for considering my application. I would welcome the chance to visit your school and talk about your literacy plan.
- Warm regards,
- Hannah Brooks
- Why it works
- • Addressed to the principal by name and tied to the school’s own goal
- • A concrete result (70% moved up a level) instead of general claims
- • Covers what principals check: management, differentiation (ELL, IEP), families, license
- • Offers to help beyond the classroom, which small schools value
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and replace the [brackets] with your grade, subject, school and one classroom success.
- Paste it into todo.is on the Today screen or send it to your agent on WhatsApp or Telegram, and attach your resume.
- Your agent reads the school site, finds the principal’s name if it is listed, and writes your letter.
- Applying to several schools? Send just the new posting link and ask it to adapt the letter.
Tips for a better result
- Read the school’s improvement plan or "about" page. One sentence linking you to their goal beats a page of general passion.
- First-year teachers: use student teaching results, a unit you designed, or tutoring and coaching experience.
- Name the curriculum or tools you know (Fundations, Eureka Math, Google Classroom) if the district uses them.
- Offer one extracurricular you can lead. Clubs and coaching often tip the decision.
teacher cover letter: FAQ
- How long should a teacher cover letter be? One page, about 250 to 400 words. Principals often review applications between classes, so short paragraphs work best.
- What should a first-year teacher cover letter include? Your certification status, student teaching placement and grade levels, one lesson or result from that placement, and how you manage a classroom. Mention any tutoring, coaching or camp work.
- Should I address the letter to the principal? Yes, if you can find the name on the school website. Your agent checks the site and uses it, or falls back to "Dear Hiring Committee".
- Can it write a letter for a teaching job abroad? Yes. Mention the country and curriculum (IB, British, American) and your agent adjusts the focus and spelling.
