TOEFL writing practice: timed tasks with rubric-style feedback
The TOEFL iBT Writing section rewards fast, clear, on-topic writing, and it has changed format in recent years. This prompt has your todo.is agent check the current task types on the official ETS site, send you a timed task each day, and mark what you write against the public scoring rubric with concrete fixes.
The prompt
- Help me practise TOEFL iBT Writing. First check the current Writing task types and timing on the official ETS TOEFL site and tell me the format in 3 lines with the link. Then every [DAYS AND TIME], send me one practice task in that format with the time limit, and wait for my answer. Score each answer with the public rubric and say what score band it is in and why. Mark grammar and word-choice errors, tell me if I answered every part of the task, and show a stronger version of my weakest 2 sentences. My test date is [TEST DATE], my target score is [TARGET SCORE] and my weak points are [WEAK POINTS]. Every Sunday send a short summary of my progress and my most repeated errors.
What to change
- [DAYS AND TIME]: E.g. "weekdays at 7:00" or "every evening at 20:00".
- [TEST DATE]: Your booked test date, or the month you plan to take it.
- [TARGET SCORE]: The score your university or programme asks for. Your agent explains how the Writing section fits into it.
- [WEAK POINTS]: E.g. "I run out of time", "my ideas are too general", "articles and prepositions". Write "not sure" if you do not know yet.
Example result
- Today's task: Academic Discussion
- Professor's question: Should universities require all students to take a course in personal finance? Two classmates have posted. Add your own view in at least 100 words. · You wrote 118 words in 10 minutes.
- Your answer, scored
- • Relevance: strong. You took a clear position (yes, required) and responded to Maria's post.
- • Development: partly. Your reason ("students make bad money decisions") is general. Add one specific example, such as student loan interest or a first credit card.
- • Language: fair. Mostly clear, with some errors that do not block meaning.
- • Estimated rubric band: mid-to-upper range. A concrete example and fewer errors would move it up.
- Errors
- • "Many student don't know" → "Many students don't know"
- • "to manage the money" → "to manage money" (general meaning, no article)
- • "it is more important than learn history" → "it is more important than learning history"
- • "In my opinion I think" → "In my opinion" (do not say both)
- Your 2 weakest sentences, stronger
- Yours: Money is important for everyone. So this course is good.
- Stronger: Unlike most electives, a finance course affects every student's life right away. A freshman who understands interest rates is far less likely to sign up for a high-fee credit card in their first semester.
- A 10-minute routine
- • 1 minute: read both classmates and choose a side
- • 1 minute: note one reason and one specific example
- • 7 minutes: write 110–140 words; mention a classmate by name
- • 1 minute: check plurals, articles and verb forms
- Tomorrow
- Write an Email task at 7:00, same time limit as the real test.
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and fill in your schedule, test date, target score and weak points.
- Paste it into todo.is or send it to your agent on WhatsApp or Telegram, where daily tasks are easy to answer.
- When a task arrives, set a timer, write your answer and send it back as text.
- Read the score and fixes, then reply "give me another one on the same topic" to apply them straight away.
Tips for a better result
- Type your practice answers. TOEFL is taken on a computer, so typing speed is part of the skill.
- Name your classmate in the Academic Discussion ("I agree with Maria that…") and then add a new point, not a summary of theirs.
- Stop adding ideas one minute before time ends and use that minute to check plurals and verb forms.
- Ask your agent to save your best answers in a Word file; rereading your own corrected answers is faster than reading model essays.
TOEFL writing practice: FAQ
- Is the TOEFL Writing format still the same? It has changed in recent years, which is why the prompt asks your agent to check the official ETS site first and match the practice to the current task types and timing.
- Is the score official? No. Your agent uses the public scoring rubric to give an estimate. Official scores come only from ETS.
- How long should my TOEFL Academic Discussion answer be? The task asks for at least 100 words. Most strong answers are around 110–150 words: long enough to develop a reason with an example, short enough to check in time.
- Can it also help with TOEFL Speaking? Yes. Ask for speaking tasks too and answer by voice message; your agent transcribes them and gives feedback.
