LinkedIn recommendation writer for colleagues, staff and clients
A former teammate asked you for a LinkedIn recommendation and it's been sitting in your notifications for two weeks. This prompt has your todo.is agent turn a few notes about the person into a specific, warm recommendation that names real work, and also writes the polite message if you'd like to ask for one in return.
The prompt
- Write a LinkedIn recommendation for [PERSON'S NAME], who was my [RELATIONSHIP: DIRECT REPORT, MANAGER, COLLEAGUE, CLIENT] at [COMPANY] from [DATES]. Their role: [THEIR JOB TITLE]. What they did well: [2-3 SPECIFIC EXAMPLES, RESULTS OR QUALITIES]. If they shared it, read their profile at [THEIR LINKEDIN URL OR SKIP] so it supports what they want next. Write it in first person, 100 to 200 words: open with how I know them, give one concrete story with a result, name 2 strengths, and close with a clear endorsement. Avoid generic praise. Also give me a 50-word version, and a friendly message asking them for a recommendation back.
What to change
- [PERSON'S NAME]: The person you're recommending.
- [RELATIONSHIP: DIRECT REPORT, MANAGER, COLLEAGUE, CLIENT]: LinkedIn asks for this too, so match it.
- [COMPANY]: Where you worked together.
- [DATES]: e.g. "2022 to 2024".
- [THEIR JOB TITLE]: Their title at the time, e.g. "Customer Support Team Lead".
- [2-3 SPECIFIC EXAMPLES, RESULTS OR QUALITIES]: Real moments, e.g. "rebuilt our help center and cut tickets by a quarter", "calm in outages".
- [THEIR LINKEDIN URL OR SKIP]: Optional. If the page needs a login, connect your Chrome with the todo.is Connector, or write "skip".
Example result
- Recommendation for Aisha Karim
- I managed Aisha for two years at Fennel Software, where she led our customer support team of six. The moment I remember most was our biggest outage in 2023. While engineering fixed the issue, Aisha set up a status page, wrote every customer update herself and kept the team calm through a 14-hour day. We lost no major accounts that month, and two customers wrote in to thank the support team.
- Aisha is also a builder. She rebuilt our help center from scratch, with 80 new articles, and support tickets dropped by about a quarter in the following quarter. She coaches people patiently, and two of her agents have since been promoted.
- Aisha combines a sharp eye for process with real care for customers and her team. Any company looking for a support or customer experience leader would be lucky to have her. I recommend her without hesitation.
- Short version (50 words)
- I managed Aisha for two years at Fennel Software. She led our support team through our worst outage without losing a major account, and rebuilt our help center, cutting tickets by about a quarter. Calm, organized and a generous coach. I recommend her without hesitation for any customer experience leadership role.
- Asking for one back
- Hi Aisha, I just posted a recommendation for you, it was easy to write. If you have a few minutes, would you be open to writing one for me too? Anything about how I supported the team during the help center rebuild would mean a lot. No pressure at all, and thanks again for two great years.
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and fill in the [brackets] with your notes. Specific moments make it stand out.
- Paste it into todo.is on the Today screen, or send it to your agent from Slack or Telegram.
- Copy the text into LinkedIn: open their profile, choose More, then Recommend.
- Ask for a change of tone, like "more formal" or "shorter, for a client".
Tips for a better result
- One real story with a result is worth more than five adjectives.
- Ask the person what role they're aiming for, and highlight the strengths that matter for it.
- Mention how you worked together in the first sentence. Readers check that first.
- Keep it honest. Don't invent numbers; "about a quarter" is fine if that's what you remember.
- Reply to recommendation requests within a week. A late recommendation is still better than none.
LinkedIn recommendation writer: FAQ
- How long should a LinkedIn recommendation be? About 100 to 200 words. Long enough for one story and two strengths, short enough that people read all of it.
- What should a LinkedIn recommendation include? How you know the person, a specific example of their work and its result, a couple of strengths, and a clear endorsement.
- Can I write a recommendation for my manager? Yes. Focus on how they led: how they supported you, made decisions and grew the team.
- Can I edit a recommendation after posting it? Yes. Go to your profile's Recommendations section, open the Given tab, and edit it. The person may need to approve the new version.
