Resume objective examples, and a prompt that writes yours
No experience yet, switching fields, or coming back after a break? A resume objective tells the employer what you want and what you already bring. Below are examples for common situations, and a prompt that has your agent write objectives tailored to the exact job you're applying for.
The prompt
- Write 4 resume objectives for me for this job: [JOB POSTING LINK OR JOB TITLE]. My situation: [STUDENT, CAREER CHANGER, RETURNING TO WORK, FIRST JOB...]. What I bring: [EDUCATION, TRANSFERABLE SKILLS, VOLUNTEER WORK, PROJECTS OR CERTIFICATES]. Each objective must be 1 to 3 sentences (under 50 words), name the role and the company, show one concrete strength with proof, and say what I will contribute, not what I want to get. Avoid cliches like "seeking a challenging position". Recommend one and tell me where to put it on my resume.
What to change
- [JOB POSTING LINK OR JOB TITLE]: A link to the job ad, or a title and company like "Junior Data Analyst at Brightwell".
- [STUDENT, CAREER CHANGER, RETURNING TO WORK, FIRST JOB...]: Your situation in a few words, e.g. "teacher moving into instructional design".
- [EDUCATION, TRANSFERABLE SKILLS, VOLUNTEER WORK, PROJECTS OR CERTIFICATES]: Anything relevant: degree, a course, a side project, a part-time job, a certificate. Or attach your resume.

Tips for a better result
- Name the company and job title. A generic objective reads like a mass application.
- Focus on what you offer the employer, not what you hope to gain from the job.
- Use proof even without work history: a class project, volunteering, a club role.
- If you have 3+ years in the same field, a resume summary usually works better than an objective.
resume objective examples: FAQ
- Are resume objectives outdated? For experienced candidates, a summary has mostly replaced them. For students, career changers and people returning to work, a short, specific objective is still useful.
- How long should a resume objective be? One to three sentences, under about 50 words. Recruiters skim it in seconds.
- What should I write in an objective with no experience? The job you're applying for, one strength backed by proof (school, volunteering, a part-time job), and how you'll help the employer.
- Can I use the same objective for every job? It's better not to. Change at least the job title, company and the strength you lead with, so it matches each posting.
