Professional references page that matches your resume
The employer liked your interview and now asks for three references. This prompt has your todo.is agent lay out a clean references page in the same style as your resume, write a one-line note on how you know each person, and draft the short email that asks them for permission and briefs them on the job.
The prompt
- Make a professional references page for me. My name and contact line: [YOUR NAME, PHONE, EMAIL, CITY]. My references: [FOR EACH: NAME, JOB TITLE, COMPANY, PHONE, EMAIL, HOW YOU KNOW THEM AND WHEN]. Match the fonts and header of my resume ([ATTACH YOUR RESUME]). For each reference add a one-line relationship note (for example "My direct manager at Orion Logistics, 2020 to 2023"). Deliver a one-page Word file and a PDF. Then write a short email I can send each reference asking permission to list them, with the job title [JOB YOU'RE APPLYING FOR] and 3 points I'd like them to mention.
What to change
- [YOUR NAME, PHONE, EMAIL, CITY]: The same contact header as on your resume.
- [FOR EACH: NAME, JOB TITLE, COMPANY, PHONE, EMAIL, HOW YOU KNOW THEM AND WHEN]: Usually 3 people: a recent manager, a senior colleague, and a client or second manager.
- [ATTACH YOUR RESUME]: Attach your resume (Word or PDF) so the page matches. Or write "simple, clean style".
- [JOB YOU'RE APPLYING FOR]: Title and company, e.g. "Logistics Coordinator at Hartwell Freight".

- Subject: Could I list you as a reference?
- Hi Maria,
- I hope things are going well at Orion. I'm applying for a Logistics Coordinator role at Hartwell Freight and I'm in the final round. Would you be comfortable being one of my references? They may call in the next two weeks.
- If you agree, these would be the most helpful points:
- • The carrier scheduling project that cut late pickups by 30%
- • How I handled peak season with 2 fewer dispatchers
- • My work with the TMS and client reporting
- I've attached the job posting and my current resume. Thank you, I really appreciate it.
- Best,
- Daniel

Tips for a better result
- Always ask before listing someone, and tell them which job and when to expect a call.
- Pick people who saw your work up close and recently: managers beat friends or distant executives.
- Keep the references page separate from your resume and only send it when asked.
- Use the reference's work email and current title, and double-check spelling of their name.
- After you get the job (or not), send each reference a short thank-you.
professional references page: FAQ
- How many references should I list? Three is standard. Some employers ask for up to five; have one or two extras ready.
- Should I put references on my resume? No. Use a separate page and send it when the employer asks. "References available on request" is also no longer needed.
- What goes on a references page? Your name and contact header, then for each person: name, job title, company, phone, email, and a short line on how you know them.
- Can I use a coworker as a professional reference? Yes, a senior coworker who knows your work well is a good choice, especially alongside at least one manager.
