Resume summary generator: five tailored openers in one go
The summary is the first thing a recruiter reads, usually for about six seconds. This prompt has your todo.is agent read the job you want, pull its key terms, and write five short summaries in different styles from your real experience, so you can pick the one that sounds like you.
The prompt
- Write 5 resume summaries for me for the role of [TARGET JOB TITLE] at [JOB POSTING LINK OR COMPANY]. My background: [YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, MAIN SKILLS AND 2-3 RESULTS WITH NUMBERS]. Read the posting and use its most important keywords. Each summary must be 2 to 4 lines (under 60 words), written without "I", start with my job title and years of experience, include at least one number, and end with what I bring to this employer. Make each one a different style: results-led, skills-led, leadership-led, industry-switch, and short punchy. Mark which one you recommend and why, and list the keywords you used.
What to change
- [TARGET JOB TITLE]: The exact title from the posting, e.g. "Senior Accountant" or "Customer Success Manager".
- [JOB POSTING LINK OR COMPANY]: A link to the job ad, or the company name if you don't have a posting. You can also paste the job description.
- [YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, MAIN SKILLS AND 2-3 RESULTS WITH NUMBERS]: Rough notes are fine, e.g. "7 years AP/AR, NetSuite, cut month-end close from 10 to 6 days". Or attach your resume.
Example result
- Resume summaries for Senior Accountant at Northgate Foods
- 1. Results-led (recommended)
- Senior accountant with 7 years in manufacturing finance. Cut the month-end close from 10 to 6 days and cleaned up $2.4M in aged receivables. Strong in NetSuite, GAAP reporting and audit prep, ready to tighten Northgate's close and controls.
- 2. Skills-led
- CPA-track accountant with 7 years of general ledger, reconciliations and accruals. Advanced Excel (Power Query, XLOOKUP) and NetSuite admin. Known for clean audit files: zero material findings in three external audits.
- 3. Leadership-led
- Accounting lead with 7 years of experience and 2 years managing a team of 3 AP/AR clerks. Built close checklists and review steps that cut errors by 40%. Brings structure and coaching to a growing finance team.
- 4. Industry-switch
- Accountant moving from retail to food manufacturing, with 7 years of GL, inventory costing and variance analysis. Rebuilt standard costs for 1,200 SKUs. Ready to apply cost accounting depth to Northgate's plants.
- 5. Short and punchy
- Senior accountant, 7 years. Faster closes, clean audits, NetSuite expert.
- Why I recommend number 1
- The posting mentions "month-end close" three times and asks for audit experience. Version 1 leads with both and has two hard numbers.
- Keywords used
- • Month-end close
- • GAAP
- • NetSuite
- • Reconciliations
- • Audit preparation
- • Accruals
- • Variance analysis
- • Internal controls
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and fill in the three [brackets]. Notes are fine; your agent polishes them.
- Paste it into todo.is on the Today screen, or message it to your agent on WhatsApp or Telegram.
- Your agent reads the job ad and sends back five summaries with a recommendation.
- Reply with tweaks like "make number 2 shorter" or "mention my CPA exam".
- Send a new job link next time; your agent remembers your background and rewrites the summary for it.
Tips for a better result
- Rewrite the summary for every job. The same three lines can't match ten different postings.
- Lead with your job title and years, then one number. Recruiters skim the first line only.
- Skip soft words like "hard-working" or "team player". Show them with a result instead.
- If you're early in your career or changing fields, ask for an objective instead of a summary.
- Add "and update my resume file with the new summary" and attach your .docx to get the edited file back.
resume summary generator: FAQ
- How long should a resume summary be? Two to four lines, or roughly 40 to 60 words. Anything longer starts to look like a cover letter and gets skipped.
- What is the difference between a resume summary and an objective? A summary shows what you've already done and suits people with experience. An objective says what you want and what you offer, and suits students, career changers and entry-level roles.
- Should a resume summary use "I"? Usually not. The standard style drops the pronoun ("Senior accountant with 7 years..."), which saves space and reads cleaner.
- Does the summary help with ATS? Yes. Applicant tracking systems scan the whole resume, and a summary is a natural place to repeat the posting's key terms, like "month-end close" or "GAAP".
