Split PDF files by page range, bookmark or every few pages
Your scanner put 40 invoices into one PDF, or a 300-page manual is too big to send. Your todo.is agent can cut the file wherever you say: by page ranges, by chapter bookmarks, every N pages or at each new invoice it spots. It names every piece so you know what is inside.
The prompt
- Split the attached PDF into separate files: [ATTACH THE PDF]. Split it [HOW TO SPLIT]. Name each new file [NAMING RULE]. Keep the original quality and page size, and keep links and bookmarks that belong to each part. Put all the files in one ZIP and give me a short list of each file name, its page range and its size.
What to change
- [ATTACH THE PDF]: Attach the PDF (up to 50 MB). If it is locked, include the password.
- [HOW TO SPLIT]: E.g. "pages 1-12, 13-40 and 41-end", "by chapter bookmarks", "every 2 pages", "one file per page" or "start a new file at every page that says INVOICE at the top".
- [NAMING RULE]: E.g. "by chapter title", "by invoice number and supplier", or "Report_part1, Report_part2".
Example result
- Split report: Scan_2026-09-30.pdf
- 46 pages in · 18 PDF files out · ZIP 9.8 MB
- How your agent found the splits
- • Read the top of every page and started a new file whenever it saw a new invoice number
- • Kept continuation pages ("page 2 of 2") with the invoice they belong to
- • Left out 2 blank pages the scanner added between batches
- Files in the ZIP
- • 01_Northwind-Supplies_INV-20931.pdf · pages 1-2 · 410 KB
- • 02_Blue-Harbor-Print_7741.pdf · page 3 · 220 KB
- • 03_Kettle-and-Co_A-1188.pdf · pages 4-5 · 380 KB
- • 04_Greenline-Logistics_GL-5502.pdf · page 6 · 190 KB
- • ... 14 more, listed in Split_list.csv inside the ZIP
- Things to check
- • File 11 had no clear invoice number (handwritten receipt). It is named 11_Unknown-supplier_p27.pdf
- • Page 33 was upside down in the scan. It was rotated in the split file
- Other ways to split the same file
- • By page range: "1-10, 11-25, 26-end" gives exactly three files
- • By bookmarks: for e-books, manuals or reports, one file per chapter
- • Every N pages: useful for double-sided forms, e.g. every 2 pages
- • By size: "pieces under 10 MB each" for email limits
- Next steps
- • Ask your agent to read the totals from each invoice into an Excel sheet
- • Or merge selected pieces back together in a new order
How to do it with todo.is
- Copy the prompt and describe where the PDF should be cut.
- Paste it into todo.is on the Today screen with the PDF attached, or send both to your agent on WhatsApp, Telegram or email.
- Your agent splits the file, names each piece and packs them into a ZIP.
- Download the ZIP or single files, or reply "split chapter 4 into two" to adjust it.
Tips for a better result
- If the pieces follow a pattern (each starts with "Invoice" or a name), describe it. Your agent can split by content, not only by page number.
- Ask for a CSV list of file names and page ranges. It makes it easy to check nothing is missing.
- For e-books and reports, splitting by bookmarks keeps chapters whole and names files after the chapter titles.
- Splitting does not reduce quality. If the pieces are still too big, ask your agent to compress each one too.
split PDF: FAQ
- How do I split a PDF into individual pages? Ask for "one file per page". Your agent makes a separate PDF for every page and names them with the page number.
- Can I split a PDF by chapters? Yes, if the PDF has bookmarks your agent splits at each one. Without bookmarks, it can find chapter headings in the text and split there.
- Does splitting a PDF lose quality? No. Pages are copied as they are, so text, images and links stay the same.
- Can I split a scanned PDF? Yes. Splitting by page numbers works on any PDF. To split by content, your agent runs OCR on the scan first to read the text.
